DW_a_mom... I get where you're coming from. I have often felt the same way. I have recently been deleting prom fundraiser emails. Honestly, I think middle school is kind of a blight as far as this stuff goes...and in general. Middle school is just a blight from every angle, really. But by high schoo... |

The ability to verbalize the right thing to do in a social situation is called "comprehension" and is a subtest of the WAIS. New research has shown that adults with AS actually score very high in this area despite their inability to implement it. Whether the adults had this ability when they were y... |

it probably depends more on the specific school and the specific teacher than on any particular philosophy. In my experience, a school with a more flexible attitude is best, regardless of its underlying philosophical leanings. I am especially wary of schools which are convinced they've got the magic... |

It has been several years since I homeschooled.. but the one thing that struck me is, can you eliminate the need to do multiple subjects each day? If he likes science, can you make it a reward that he gets a whole day of science on Friday (or whatever) in exchange for doing other things on other day... |

I really like Body Shop's peppermint foot cream. I mainly do use it on my feet (which get horribly dry and cracked), but it's also nice on hands. My husband has been using it on his hands for an eczema like condition and he likes it also. it's not as greasy as cetaphil and it seems to really do the ... |

My boy would have been more upset with the grammar in "20 items or less" ... (but it should be FEWER Dad!) ...Brings it up every time - and not very quietly. lol! I really hate that, too, actually. And so, my children know well that it's incorrect and often comment. Don't get them started on mispla... |

re: the repeating dialog... I asked about this specifically when his adhd diagnosis was made. They felt it was something he does because it's stimulating, not actually scripting. I agree, I think. He never used it as a communication method. It's more that he's so stimuated by the movie or whatever a... |

actually now that I wrote that, wonder if this is somehow an NVLD-ish profile vs a non-NVLD profile while both could still be on the spectrum somewhere.... |

I still don't have the official answer on my 15 yr old ( that comes on the 8th). But ..as we all do... I find myself considering my other two children...at least for now my second. No. 3 is still too little to tell. Second child is 12 and has had an ADHD diagnosis since age 6. He does very well on c... |

Full Scale IQ, as Chronos said, averages the verbal and performance sections on the WISC. Often when there is a large discrepancy, they will not do a FSIQ but will give you something called a GAI. This is what they do when they figure the low score will lower the average so much as to give an inaccu... |

I know that at least methylphenidate (ritalin) is metabollized in water and exits the system very quickly. Not sure about the other stimulants but my impression is that a trial is pretty safe and if it doesn't help, there are no lasting effects. My 12 yr old son has a diagnosis of ADHD since age 6. ... |

I'm not taking the position here one way or the other on getting a label, but in answer to your question... My daughter is 15 and probably finally getting the AS label. In some ways, I wish we'd had it earlier. We focused on the wrong things and were not as tolerant of some things as we could've bee... |

I've been reading everything and listening to podcasts (UCDavis MIND has some good podcasts on autism and aspergers).. Everything seems to agree that there is little empirical evidence that social skills classes really produce measurable long term benefits. My daughter is in a therapy group for teen... |
