Hello, I am a self-advocate and an autism researcher who helped design an online training study on knowledge of autism. It is the first of its kind to intentionally include autistic adults, and is based on up-to-date autism research as well as ideas drawn from the neurodiversity movement. It allows ... |

You're welcome to participate and/or let others know about an online study I, an autistic researcher, contributed to on conceptions of autism. It's the first that we know of to compare autistic and non-autistic people's knowledge of autism. We want everyone's feedback on a training about autism and ... |

Hi all, A short but comprehensive paper on autism's sensory and movement differences was recently published: http://www.frontiersin.org/Integrative_Neuroscience/10.3389/fnint.2013.00038/full It is in an "open access" journal, meaning you don't need to pay to read it and it can be shared freely. It p... |

Hello, I am an autistic self-advocate and PhD student in educational psychology studying autism. If you identify as autistic or with another disability, please participate in online research conducted by autistic people, researchers, and other allies. If you haven't yet, you will need to first take ... |

I have received various requests for sharing information about the results, and have an update. We are still collecting responses at least through the month, so anyone who hasn't yet is welcome to take it, but it appears we have some trends about social networking sites. Autistics seem less likely t... |

I think Simon Baron-Cohen has done more than any researcher in recent times to dehumanize and pathologize autistics. He claims autistics are evolutionarily inferior – that “theory of mind” (ToM) is core to being human and has evolved to make us superior to animals, but autistics lack it. NTs have To... |

Thanks! Some autistics sharply feel differently (as feedback I've received on a blog shows), so here are some public clarifications: Here’s some information about the survey methods and intentions. First of all, I did not design most of the survey, including these parts, but have given significant f... |

There's something there, yes, but I think it stems more from the fact about when people over 30 tended to be diagnosed vs. people younger and how that affected their life experience. Autism has only been an official diagnosis since 1980 and officially recognized as continuing beyond childhood since ... |

I think this is a profoundly sad reflection on society - not on us, that we are treated this way. Most NTs probably mean well and are relatively naive about not considering us autistic. I'm sure sometimes they tell us that we're not on the spectrum or they don't/didn't think we're on the spectrum to... |

I have mixed feelings about the responses so far - misery loves company? Really there are things that are much worse in society, and I think we autistic people, on average, are more social justice-oriented and care less about superficial (literally in this case) than NTs. I also think we are more aw... |

Clearly autism relates to the brain and nervous system (hence, differences with emotions, sensory input, motor skills etc.). Whether psychological or medical issues are core to some "subtypes" :( of autism (I deeply fear scientific knowledge will be advanced too far on this, opening the door to euge... |

Sorry about the delay, but I now have some information about sharing the results of the survey with the fellow autistic community. I could e-mail preliminary results once all the data is analyzed and before a paper is submitted. I could keep track of who wants results and send them to you once ready... |

True, except I strongly dislike the word "co-morbid". It comes from the medical model idea that health is freedom from death and the absence of disease, and "disease" is abnormal functioning and not necessarily dysfunctional functioning. So people with multiple "diseases" (co-occurring disabilities/... |

I also wish to clarify that the survey will be open to get more participants for a while longer, perhaps at least a few more weeks. If you would like to share it with anyone, feel free. Neurotypicals can take it too, for that matter. |
