Most of us see volition/free-will/creativity as the defining characteristic of life. Bacteria, without a brain, make simple decisions. Individual organs make rational choices of which our conscious minds are not aware. Our brains work while we sleep, and we sometimes awake to find solutions that wer... |

If autism is not a disease, what could it be except an evolutionary adaptation? Each and every organism is one of nature's experiments - an attempted evolutionary adaptation, and some adaptations are more effective than others. Furthermore the adaptation that began at conception continues to develop... |

Autism is a collection of personality traits which become conspicuous when they occur in ret*d people. I have a ret*d son who is autistic. I share many of his personality traits, and I don’t regret any of them. Man’s mental and emotional makeup is undergoing rapid evolution. How could they not? Our ... |

Thank you for the responses, everyone. Everyone is different, and differences should be celebrated, rather than deplored. I've always known that, but what I must remind myself is that psychotherapy is helpful for some people. Some people really appreciate such help. A Few Impertinent Questions about... |

Am I an Aspie? (If so, I don’t remember ever regretting it, and I would rebel if anyone tried to pin the label upon me. ) If I am not an Aspie, what is the significance of the traits my family and I share with my autistic son? Is the same true of other family’s of autistics? Are such diagnoses reall... |

Everyone faces challenges, and no one comes up with consistently perfect responses. Perhaps everyone is entitled to decide for themselves whether they regard their responses as inappropriate enough to be labelled a “disorder”. Personally, I’d never allow some psychiatrist or psychologist to label me... |

I just read an interesting book, The Big Short, by Michael Lewis. It’s about the recent, sub-prime, Wall-Street collapse. In the book, Michael Burry is a neurologist who decides he lacks people skills and concludes that he doesn’t want to be a doctor any more. So he heads for Wall Street, where he i... |

Aspies apparently acquire their knowledge the hard way, learned - not intuitively absorbed from the surrounding culture. It is not surprising they often see themselves as part of the counter culture. Personally, I cherish that aspect of my nature and would never regard it as an abnormality. I do not... |

I’m curious as to how many of you find the diagnosis of Asperger’s useful and how many of you regard your Aspie traits as mere deviations from average, that are assets at times? (Personally, I would never choose to be more average.) I’m not selling the book, Invader. It can be read for free at: http... |

All of you who have responded to my questions are obviously above average intelligence. I’ve read a little more on the web site and realize Asperger’s is regarded a continuum. Do most of you find the diagnosis helpful? I’ve never regarded myself as typical, but being average was never something to w... |

you are venturing into a realm not amenable to scientific process. Agreed, Wavefreak58. But I have hopes that science will eventually break out of its prison of deterministic materialism. It is true that belief that purpose is an aspect of reality would be a philosophical assumption. But the assump... |

Some of the things that life does may look creative to us, but I don't see why that should stop us analysing the mechanics of the processes. Agreed, Tough Diamond. Just so we don’t insist that mechanical formulas be accepted as ultimate explanations. What to you mean by intrinsically creative? Crea... |

I do enjoy people-from-the-wrong-planet’s comments to my questions. It is true that Darwin was tentative, ToughtDiamond. However that is not true of today’ Darwin supporters.
