I can really relate to this. My health issues seem to come in clusters, and it's really difficult to sort out what is the real problem and which other symptoms are caused by my nervous system being in overdrive all the time. Right now I'm having back pain that comes and goes, but also often a queasy...

Computer Science - back in the mid-70s. I was happy with my choice back then and have had a satisfying career (mainly doing database design and programming). Nowadays I'm not sure whether it would be a wise a choice. Many of these types of jobs are being sent offshore and job prospects are not so go...

About five years ago I was in a similar situation: terrified to come to work every day, totally isolated, and overwhelmed by self-doubt. No one else seemed to react to work that way. On weekends and even on vacation I couldn't turn off my fears or stop thinking about work. I had known for several ye...

Welcome to WP - I think you'll enjoy it here. I've been a software developer for over 30 years; good career for an aspie overall but it hasn't been easy. The two biggest issues for me are time pressure / stress and having to understand and modify ugly code created by others. Some of the programs in ...

You might want to consider how your age and the changes in attitudes and awareness of ASDs have influenced your opinions. For 50+ years I did well in school and in the workplace, yet avoided most human contact and lived for the most part in a fantasy world. My parents surely realized that there was ...

>> Computer science is not a good field to be in right now. If you are looking for a programing job don't plan on getting one anytime soon. Of all the computer and electronic fields I think computer programing is the only one that is expected to lose jobs. Now add in bad economy and they are going t...

I think it is probably pretty common. I have Asperger's and am often defeated by stresses and challenges (especially at work) that other people seem to shrug off. Often I just collapse after work and sleep for a couple of hours.

>> 8 years computer programming originally ok but more and more pressure with less and less structure and training. This was my story as well. I've been a developer/programmer for almost 30 years. In the beginning, people in this field were really valued and treated very well, but the workload and s...

I think most of us who have been programmers can relate to what you describe. It's absurd to evaluate knowledge workers based on being at their desk from 8-5. We do a lot of brainstorming and creative problem-solving at home, on evenings and weekends. Also, the workload sometimes has huge peaks and ...

Last month I turned 52, although I feel a lot younger. A few years ago, I read a book about high functioning autistics, which led me to other books on Asperger’s. I’m self-diagnosed, but there’s no doubt in my mind that I have it. I missed out on a lot, especially when someone was trying to connect ...
