Maybe worth thinking about: With an incident like Sandy Hook, the idea that Adam Lanza was evil is difficult for many people to accept. Unlike Osama, Saddam, or the suicide pilots of 9/11, Lanza was one of the community which he (allegedly) decimated. This may be partly why a designation of autism w...

I find that an interesting phrase, "exoskeleton of culture." But I have to question your association of culture with a positive force and something that needs to be maintained. Not that I am confident in offering an an alternative to it, only that it seems to be at the root of the problem, not a sol...

I am of the opinion that the culture of electronic media creates all kinds of mythical conspiracies in the public psyche, however no one in particular is necessarily in charge of them or substantially impacting what eventually results in the public psyche. There is a mass effect of social contagion...

I'm not sure how any of this could significantly affect ABA therapy as an early childhood intervention, which by the way aversive ABA therapies are rarely used anymore in the US as part of that therapy. It may not be overtly aversive but it is still behavior modification, and this is always going t...

and then there is this, from our gracious host Alex Plank: As the Newtown news unfolded, I noticed a huge traffic spike to our online community. When I checked the servers, I realized that people were finding the website by Googling search terms such as "autistic killers," "asperger's and criminal b...

Most are white men, but a surprising number are women, Asians and blacks. Many have college degrees, but most are unemployed. Many are military veterans. Why is it surprising there would be Asians and blacks, I wonder? The military veteran factor seems to get downplayed in the press. That's certain...

"holy money" is very early Swans; i saw them right after Burning World came out, which I think was when they piqued (Gira's Skin is their best work, IMO). More recent stuff seems a bit bland by comparison.

i didn't care for American Psycho so much - it ended up seeming weightless once the character's acts were suggested to be fantasies - but I was impressed by The Informers . Ellis became a literay figure for a brief time, I think, because he tapped into a certain mood of the time (zeitgeist), that of...

this is from an interview with David Whyte, here TS: So just to ask you to explain what you’re saying in a slightly different way, if you can stick with me here…what you’re saying is when we discover our sense of alienation, our sense of “I don’t fit in; I don’t belong,” that this could actually ope...

As for religious experiences, there's a difference between having a strong emotional experience induced by messing with the brain in some way, and a genuine spiritual experience which has to cause a positive lasting change in your ethics to be real in my book. i'm not sure how you intend to separat...

Need to catch up with this thread, as it overlaps with my area of research right now. But meantime, here's this, with apologies if I am repeating what's already been linked to: some parallels this ones a bit obscure, but interesting: http://webmaster.bwdp.org.uk/sociopathy http://www.sociopathworld....
