I can certainly remember, at a major birthday party in my honour - and my brain was racing too fast - when somebody greeted me with "Happy birthday" I automatically said "Happy Birthday" back to them. Hmmm, I doubt that it was their birthday too that day. Goodness knows what they thought. Well, hec...

To my way of thinking, I believe that would have meant the one on the 2nd floor, or the floor directly above the food court. But there's nothing wrong with asking for clarification if you're not sure what someone means, and even if the guy didn't know why you weren't understanding him, he is neverth...

Do you have such options in the US to bypass exams or what would you do? It depends on each individual state. We live in NY, with lots of regulations. Homeschoolers are required to take end-of-the-year exams every other year until 7th grade - on alternate years, a portfolio of their work is offered...

Yes to audio books! We've done them for a couple of months (audible.com) and he LOVES them. Audible is like a membership site, which works for us, but as mentioned - you can get them for free elsewhere.

AS mom & Ediself: I don't know if it would help or not, but sometimes we just stress the "you have to do it this way because it's a rule" concept. Since my kid is (fairly) black and white, we occasionally go in that direction. Sometimes we also have conversations such as: J: I don't care about.....

From what I understand, this is common with AS kids. They expend huge amounts of mental energy during the day trying to handle and keep it together in school, and by the time they get home, there isn't anything left. Hence, a meltdown....or two. We pulled our son this year to home school, but what h...

After I realized he was embarrassed, I told him your story about looking at car windows and what some people thought! He giggled. :)

So, I asked him why, nicely, saying I was interested. He got embarrassed, and said it was "personal."

Oh, well.

I'll just have to speculate, until he tells me some day!

I have thought about asking directly in the past, but didn't want to embarrass him.

Hi, Parent of an 11-year old here, with a question that I don't have an answer to. Sometimes when my son (diagnosed AS) is talking or explaining something to me, he watches himself in the reflection of the window, or a glass case, if we're around one, and partly talks "to himself," at the same time ...

Tracker: I just wanted to thank you for all the time you spent putting together your answer for me! Wow! Your "options" section jogged my thinking, and I have a couple of questions for my son to try to clarify what writing is like for him, physically and mentally. I mean, obviously I know it's...

Thanks so much for all the thoughts and suggestions! Iceb: I downloaded the free 30-day trial of "Kidspiration," the kid's version of "Inspiration." It just might have some possibilities - even my NT daughter was fooling around with it last night, and objected when I had to kick her off the computer...

Iceb:
What software were you able to use to help you with essays and writing? How did you deal with full-blown academics?...did someone read to you all the time, or did you have software to help with that also?
