I think the social convention is to compliment them back, if you can. I rarely do this though because I think it's ridiculous. As long as you thank them, you are not being rude. Not my shirt because I can't stand the feel of fabric in my mouth, but I have and still chew on any thing plastic, particularly soft plastic.

I have asperger's and i do that too, when ever an awkward part happens i will ether hide my face and plug my ears or change the channel then change back when i think that the awkward part will be over.
