Thanks for the posts. I hate that you have these swirling dark masses in your heads too, but (on the selfish side) it's nice to know I'm not the only one. Sorry I'm a bit late-ish with this - it's the end of the semester and things are a bit crazy. Actually, that was one of the reasons I initially p... |

All too often I find myself thinking of things I've done or said, and end up beating myself up for anything that might be wrong, reliving it in my head over and over. If anyone were to listen to me in my apartment, they'd swear I had Tourette's because I'll just blurt out, "f**k you!" but ... |

I will be 46 at the end of this month. I LIKE getting older- you could not pay me to be in my 20s again. But don't be fooled, I am not anywhere near living a "normal" life. I quit high school, quit college, and even quit my first graduate program - but I went back and finally got my B.A.'s, my M.A. ... |

Well, I've learned that life is what you make of it. And it sounds like you're aware of that too, and are taking steps to create the life you want for yourself. That alone should be celebrated! (do you know how many people, on and off the spectrum, never come to that realization?) Congratulations!! ... |

I've always loved watching bats fly, but I've never seen them up close and personal like this, it's like watching an entirely different creature.
I am fascinated with bat cam!! |

I am usually paralyzed because there are so many thing that I cannot eat, but I don't want to be "that person" who quizzes the waitperson with all my questions. I try to pick something simple, something I'm certain no one can screw up, but I have been reduced to tears when the server brings my food ... |

I was not diagnosed until I was in my 40's and it was definitely worth it. Sometimes I would just wonder what was wrong with me, why I couldn't just suck it up and act like everyone else. When the doctor finally told me that yes, she agreed that I did indeed have High Functioning Autism, I nearly cr... |

When I was a kid, I worried about how I acted when I was alone, because I thought I was being watched. By whom? No idea. But I thought about it a lot. Now that I'm older, I find myself less inclined to think about being watched when I'm alone, but I am overly conscious of being out among people - I ... |

Yes, but the response that irritates me is when they decide the diagnosis is wrong - that there's no way I'm on the spectrum. I can't decide what this response stems from: their inability to accept my diagnosis, their insecurity with the diagnosis, their incomprehension of what being Autistic means,... |

Last weekend I was out-of-town, staying at a house I'd never visited before. During the stay, I accidentally locked myself in the guest bathroom (this is not actually true - I was unfamiliar with the locking mechanism and "thought" I had locked myself in the guest bathroom) It was a small bathroom, ... |

I'm in the midst of dealing with my interest-hopping, as I need to choose a PhD program fairly soon, but I am worried I would lose interest in it after only a couple of years. Plus, once you get a PhD, apparently you spend the rest of your life working in that area - that sounds terrifying! and clau... |

As a person who is quietly introverted, your daughter sounds like a nightmare to me. I would love to handpick the people that I interact with on a day-to-day basis, but guess what? the world doesn't work that way. She needs to learn this now. If she wants everybody to maintain high energy and consta... |

Thanks for all of your replies. I often think rules are rather ridiculous, as they seem to cater to the lowest common denominator who screwed it up for the rest of us when they couldn't simply respect the other people around them. So on one hand I think rules are overrated, but on the other, I think... |

The title is supposed to have double meaning: not just that rules have an importance in everyday life, but also that we (as Aspies and ASDs) take them so seriously. In our library at college we have a few floors that are designated as "Quiet" floors, which mean that you can talk quietly and even sti... |
