My son who is 5 is currently awaiting an assessment for being on the spectrum here in the UK. About a month ago we were told it would take a year, we've been surprised to find next week he has been requested for the pediatrician part of his assessment. There's no detail what it involves and whilst w...

I think I have a problem with the label and the usefullness of a diagnosis. If we believe parents instincts are anything to go by then in our case we believe our son is either just on or just off the spectrum, he is five and shows some traits but does not at this stage seem to be showing any seriou...

Just from a purely logical point of view.

Is there anyway you get get him to do home schooling but also enrol in some groups with activities that he likes so he gets the best of both worlds?

I was intrigued by the discussion on the other forum and Aspie's sense of humour and there seemed to be some trends within that. What about kids? I would have said in the last 6 months my five year old son who is waiting assessment has developed a much more fun side, he laughs more etc and seems qui...

DWam thanks for that...... Our son has had different issues, the main one being in nursery not joining in in bigger groups though towards the end he was showing big improvements. He shows a variety of AS traits although in our opinion these are neither consistent nor actually dehabilitating (at this...

DW I'm interested to hear what happened within the end of that first year...was it a case of the social interaction starting to develop and your son not adjusting accordingly or something else? Our school has been excellent, they are aware of junior's history and have been able it would appear to ge...

I was interested to hear the experience of parents with children on the spectrum when they started school and how the transition went from either nursery or home life. My son is 5 he is currently awaiting a full assessment for AS (probably a year away) he started primary one here in the UK 8 days ag...

goodolddays What I think you have failed to absorb through all of this is that many people here REALLY understand the feelings you have expressed. Many of us have expressed the difficulty and pain we felt when we discovered our child's diagnosis. We also have listened to the other's here that came ...

Whilst I can sympathise with your situation, I am currently waiting to have my son evaluated and I have been through some of the emotions you have, I do think you've came on this forum a little too full on in many aspects indeed with the greatest of respects you seem to be so emotional about it that...

I think there is a degree of resentment that goes with the "identifer" and it may damage your relationship with the family. Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. The dilemma comes into play because the mother has expressed concern with his problems in school. I know that having an AS diagnosis c...

I think there is a degree of resentment that goes with the "identifer" and it may damage your relationship with the family. I don't think it's in your remit to express an opinion because the fact you've had to come on here and ask indicates you are not certain. I'd leave it unless there was an expre...

I'm interested in hearing further comments on what parents have said on here before that kids who are affected by Aspergers seem to show more noticeable traits around the ages of around 6 to 8 and that problems in the social aspect of things starts to become more noticeable. My son is awaiting a dia...

Thanks for the replies, they've been very helpful.I'm also about halfway through Tracker's book which has been helpful also. I think I've already gleamed some understanding of Autism and the nature of it being a spectrum. There may be areas of communality but we are talking about individuals and I c...

What would you do differently with your AS child? What did you learn the hard way etc etc. This is also open to those who grew up on the spectrum and can look back at what they feel they missed out on...etc etc I think my family are facing a future with a child either on the spectrum or very close t...

My son knows his younger sister in ways he cannot know anyone else, and she knows him, so the AS doesn't really create much of a barrier; they have a healthy and normal love - hate sibling relationship. The main thing he just can't manage, that I ascribe to the AS, is holding his tongue when she is...
