It sounds like you're describing body tensing, which IS a stim. Does it look like he's doing palates when he does it?? lol My son has done this for years, and it's when he's very excited about something. It's a good kind of excited. My son also shoves his whole hand in his mouth. It started out with... |

I watched a presentation a couple of weeks ago, called Deceiving Images and the feeling I got from it, was that many people think in pictures, or at least that they can be manipulated in that manner. Here's a link if you're interested. It's a bit long, but I didn't think it was dry. http://www.linkt... |

My son's therapist said that one of her frustrations is parents starting a new therapy every two weeks and then quittting before any progress is made. That's just nutters. It sounds like they haven't researched Autism enough to fully understand what their children are up against. Maybe they're look... |

At the end of the day, all I really care about is the communication. I don't care if I have to change his diapers until he's 30 years old, but I want him to be able to communicate with others, It is one of the most vital aspects of being a human being I think. Nice to hear from you Bauhauswife :) Y... |

it seems like the DS/ASD parents don't really discuss function much. It seems as though some of them have just resigned themselves to having a severely ret*d, non-functioning child for the rest of their lives. I'm not ready to give in to that just yet. I know it's gonna be hard, but you have to try... |

Wow, this thread totally exploded!! I know I've been gone for a while, but I didn't forget you guys. I found a fb group of parents with children who have dual diagnosis Down Syndrome and Autism. You can imagine my joy at finding such a group. Children with DS/ASD are a completely unique creature I h... |

I had to take one of these tests for a service station one time, and one of the questions that has always stuck with me is, "When you are watching a movie, do you tend to sympathize with the bad guy?"
Seriously?? Who sides with the bad guy?? ![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_confused.gif) |

Coming up to four and not 'talking yet. Might get a day where he says one or two individual words crystal clear but in an odd tone. But it's totally random a bit like him, bless the little guy. :) 1 year on from that post and no words at all anymore :( I know...it kind of feels like a slipping away... |

My son started talking at around 1 1/2, just words or a simple phrases(go Diego go, that kind of thing) but lost all of his speech and hand signs by the time he was 3. He'll be 6 in Nov. and he still isn't speaking or signing. He hums all day. His favorite one is "Eeeee.." |

extended school year, basically summer services. it is a requirement in ieps that esy be considered. i have never, not even once, had it offered to my kids or even been told that its a possibility, but every single iep has the box checked that it was considered and determined to be unneccessary. i ... |

That picture is so cute! I know what you mean about retention. But, it will come. For the longest time, it seemed like my son wasn't learning either. A summer camp and an ESY combo sounds great! My son did a camp specifically for children with autism last year in Los Angeles and really enjoyed it. ... |

Judging by his dvd collection, I'd have to say that Pocoyo and Yo Gabba Gabba are my son's favorite shows. I think Pocoyo is a very interesting concept in that there really are no background visuals, it's just a stark white background, and the colors are very bright, and the characters and subjects ... |

My son(5yrs) is going to ESY, but we're kind of splitting it up this year, because he got awarded a spot in the summer camp, so he'll start his ESY later in the summer. During the summer ESY is the only way he still gets his services. I don't think he's really retaining much, as he doesn't seem to b... |

You need respite care! Like ASAP. I have it available to me through the Board of Disabilities; 300 hours per year I believe. I've never used it, but it's there for those times just as you have described. I had never before now ever heard of that, but yes, most definitely. It may not be available ev... |
