Very true. I suspect they're right about girls/women being underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed because the symptoms manifest differently.

I feel frustrated that I don't know what I am doing wrong. Getting the official diagnosis was the biggest part for me. Now I know why I don't fit in, and no longer feel obligated to try. I think you're right about late-in-life diagnosis causing insecurity in social situations. We just didn't have any frame of reference for them when we were growing up.

Sounds like they're trying to cure you (turn you into another NT) rather than help you deal with the world as an Aspie.
I think I'd rather be an Aspie without support than any kind of NT.

Since autism was not a mainstream issue at the time, I'm guessing the definition of functionality was more like that of other developmental disabilities: able to feed and wash oneself.

Right. With the dial on the inner wrist instead of facing out. It's always felt more natural to me to look at the inside of my wrist than the outside when I want to know the time. Although these days it's more for show.

Depends on the situation/environment: If you try to act NT while people are getting to know you, they'll expect you to behave like them and to like or understand the same things they do. Then they misunderstand when your AS traits make it hard for you to live with them, and either ostracize or haras...
