I had speech then lost it in infancy. I regained it and then gradually lost it again starting in adolescence when my periods of inability to speak became more frequent. By age 13 I was sent to a neurologist and neuropsychologist in part because of the increased frequency of speech difficulty. By ag...

I don't know. All I know is if I use the word "Normal" I get yelled at, and instead of listening to the point of the statement I made, for instance if I say "Unlike the usual normal response of Z, X causes me to Y", they go on a big long rant about how there is no normal and then refuse to listen to...

However, it is not uncommon to read posts on WP in which "neurotypicals" are stereotyped as shallow, conformist, unintelligent or hostile, and I feel that the word has acquired these sorts of connotations for some members. Yikes, I didn't know that. I mainly use it when explaining to others about m...

In any case, I agree that the shared neurology of being human is greater than the differences between autistic and non- autistic neurology. I never said it wasn't, nor do I disagree. It's just I don't think that similarity or shared traits are as valuable as the differences. I believe that humans a...

really? why do you need a word to refer to it? i guess it is because you are absorbed with the development of your life, and you need to compare yourself with others to justify what you think. who knows. No, it's just I have to spend a great deal of my time explaining the reasons for my differences...

I would suggest contacting the local autism society, ask what parents in the area are doing to help their "transition-age" children, then see if there is some way for you to get into those groups or classes. You might look for an aspie group run by a speech therapist. If you enroll in a class or tw...

Only a court can rule you incompitent, even if that happens they wont take you away from your husband or your kids away as long as you are with your husband. As far as declaring you incompitent...that doesnt happen that often, but is a long involved court process. Unless you go around breaking laws...

ediself: Breathes. Thank you. Cleaning can be problematic, but I've been getting better at it. My friend D. has been teaching me little tricks to help remember how and in what order and what it's supposed to look like when done. I do when it counts, like against the bishop. But sometimes I prefer to...

So I finally got to go to a psychologist and get my clinical diagnosis as aspergers verified with a doctoral diagnosis. I expected to be changed to High functioning autism. To my surprise, after all the evaluating and testing and stuff, the psychologist says I'm borderline Low functioning. I get his...

I HATE HATE HATE HATE that. I get it all the time at church, along with other "motives" I supposedly have, like seeking attention, and laziness.

I tend to get on poorly with them in person, as many of the ones I encounter have little to know frame of reference to understand what autism is, such as our new missionary from Uganda. It took us two weeks to explain to him my friend K doesn't talk, period (he'll use pecs occasionally, but that's i...

21.) Prattle on about how they're sure you'll "overcome" your autism and be a perfectly normal person some day. 22.) Talk to whoever they're with, as though they weren't there. 50. take then shopping with you and then randomly walk off somewhere leaving them alone in the middle of a crowd I hate 21...

I've been wondering about this to. I self diagnose myself as most likely having it but it might be helpful to talk to someone about it. I'm not sure if you just look up psychologists or therapists in the Yellow Pages or if there is a referral process. Also what kind of cost would I be looking at? F...

Trust me, people CAN survive. How do I know? I survived. I am intellectually fine, I've been told I'm on the smart side, but given my functioning level, I shouldn't be able to care for myself. I can't work, talk to people other than in pre-planned monologue scripts, answer questions verbally within ...

First off, just as a caveat, I am against SSI Disability for someone so young. I honestly think the time spent getting disability could be better spent in other areas, such as career support... Yeah- I'm being harsh. I have a 0 tolerance policy for anyone who doesn't work but is capable of it (and ...
