Can you have a Functional Behavior Assessment done on him? It sounds to me like you need to determine WHY he is having the behavior so that you can come up with a plan to shape the behavior into something more socially acceptable. Is the behavior for avoidance, attention, sensory, tangible? Why is h...

I agree with the post above. BUT on the other hand, if you live in such a small town that everybody knows everyone else's business, then perhaps it would be better that YOU tell people so at least you can properly explain it. Maybe make a pros and cons list because only you know the culture of the p...

I am a special education teacher and I have had great success by teaching children their multiplication tables using "Touch Math." You should google it. Maybe the school could try this approach? Good luck.

I actually meant that she yells (cries loudly-yells is their term) when frustrated because she lacks the knowledge of how to effectively communicate this. I just received a call from a Certified Behavior Analysist who is a professor at our local university. He is going to work with us and do an FBA....

No. They ask the other student, "did you say..." and the other student says "no" so automatically she assumes that my daughter is lying (and she is no liar!). If she would tell the teacher "they looked at me funny" or something like that, I would say that maybe she percieved things the wrong way, bu...

So we had a meeting at the school today to address bullying concerns. Mostly, my daughter (who is 8) has an easy trigger. Some of her classmates have figured this out and like to "set her off." The teacher feels that my daughter is a bully because when she gets upset she yells. We tried (with little...

Her neurologist actually wanted me to kinda read up on things and see what I think. I'll give you a few examples. As a small child, she never liked toys that made noise and could not stand the sound of balloons popping. She never really played "with" other children (in the same room--yes, but with--...

I'm sorry that you feel that way. I probably wouldn't notice. I'm more interested in stimulating conversation. Remember that you have a lot to offer (in a conversation). One thing that I've taught myself to do is nod when someone is speaking to me to let them know that I am listening, and then to sm...

I do not have an ASD diagnosis, but I have ALWAYS had a hard time making friends an carrying on a conversation. I have found that if you show an interest in the other person, that helps. Find something to pay them a compliment on and then maybe ask them a question or two about their background. Stic...

My daughter is 8 and her neurologist thinks she may have Asperger's Syndrome (I've suspected this off and on since birth). She has gotten better since we started ADHD meds and therapy. But she still has tantrums or crying from time to time. I feel that this mostly happens when she is frustrated and ...

I am a special education teacher. My child does not qualify for special education (yet). We go on the 14th for the possible diagnosis.
