I go to a school call the Hiram G Andrews Center in Johnstown, Pa. I have a few good friends but recently one of those friends almost gave up on me cause i didn't know how to tell her when we were at her house over the 4th of July weekend that i had shutdown. Now apparently her whole family hates m... |

He CAN connect (but he is often into himself). He CAN converse back and forth (but he often prefers to talk about his own interests). He CAN make inferences and see a "big picture". He CAN lie. HE does have empathy. HE does understand embarrassing or uncomfortable social situations. HE does make fa... |

I had recently wanted to take a regular subject in that department, but the teacher has basically refused to make any time available to meet with me (and another staff member) to discuss my taking the subject. This has never, ever been a problem before. I have never even met nor spoken to him, but ... |

Is there any way to get extra time on tests without proof of a diagnosis? As a future college student, not having the time to finish is really the only thing that I'm concerned about. I wondered about this, too. Like if you just communicated directly with the professor and asked for extra time. Sou... |

Thanks. He's going to study business/pre-law.
Did you ever tell just your professors (one-on-one)? Or did you ever have any incidents that made you feel like you needed to reveal your diagnosis? |

My son will be going to college this fall. The university has an "office of disabilities" (although I think it has a more politically correct name like "Office of Access" or something like that) and the registration papers encourage students to "declare their documented disability" to this office. I... |

Full tuition scholarship from my university, and a handle of other small scholarships. My son received a full tuition scholarship through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Have they changed their program recently? I was National Merit, and the organization itself offered essentially no mo... |

I'm a Christian and I'm interested in space. I'm surprised at how many people think there's a conflict between being Christian/believing in a Creator and being interested in science and what man can learn through observation. For me everything I learn through science just reinforces my belief in God... |

I don't really have any advice for you, but I can sure sympathize. My son is 18 now. When he was younger and would do something socially inappropriate, whether we told him or whether he figured it out on his own, his reply was always (in a loud voice) "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry". My son said "Bye-Bye" completely in context and waved his arm when he was 6 months old. Then didn't say much of anything until he was 2. At that point it was mostly echolalia. Gradually he started making sentences at about 4. He could read when he was 3. |
