If you come up with any additional things that work, please add them to this thread, because my son has similar "rituals", although he is still in kindergarten. If there are several exercises on a page, he has to box them off or draw dividing lines between them before he starts. If two answers are t...

Wow animalcrackers! You have so many good points in there. I hope we can get a link to your post in the Parenting Index Sticky. There probably needs to be a new category in that sticky called Communication. A Speech Pathologist should be able to help find out what part of the language system needs a...

My 3-year-old DD also has atypical intonation. To me, it sounds like a person learning a new language. The first few times they say a new word or phrase in a new language, it comes out of their mouth a bit weird (too high, too low, too fast, too slow). As they get used to the new language, the new w...

My daughter was nonverbal up until her third birthday. Like Inthistogether's daughter, she did not know what speech was for. I am not familiar with VBA, but I am familiar with PECS and how its use can facilitate speech. We started PECS communication for about 9 months before my daughter said her fir...

Rejoice! Rejoice! Happy dance! Neanderthal, thank you for following up with your story. It shows how love and perseverence really do pay off. I know there is a long way to go; hang in there. I suggest that you print out your first & last post and put it somewhere where you will see it often and ...

Has your psych considered the norepinephrine (sp?) or dopamine reuptake inhibitors? Seratonin isn't the only thing that can go out of whack. This is anecdotal evidence, but it seems to me that SSRIs space out a lot of people, but the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors can sharpen concentration for s...

[[[hugs to CWA]]] Hang in there. I have had my son kicked out of daycare too. And I work full time as well. What helped me the most is when a friend of mine who licenses childcares told me, that more kids get kicked out of preschool than high school. I don't know why but it made me feel better. A ye...

Like many parents here, mine are still young and I haven't been able to try yet what I am going to suggest. But there are some in my parent group that I go to who have used written contracts. You mentioned that your son uses written communication to communicate his feelings. So his written receptive...

When I was a kid, I really identified with the Sesame Street song "How do I Know I'm Here?". I couldn't find the lyrics to it, but it goes something like: How do I know I'm here/Am I standing on the ground?/How do I know I'm not in outer space/ somewhere where I can't be found? So it's not a floatin...

Our last speech therapy appointment was GREAT. They role-played playground interactions. It covered saying hello & good bye, asking for turns, inviting someone to play together, etc. I felt like it was perfect because it is exactly the situation that he has the most difficulty with. He does not...

Hi E_V_E, welcome to WP! My son is 5 and having similar social challenges. His SLP calls it pragmatics. In his IEP goals, the SLP wrote that they will be working on a) what to say, b) how to say it (correct nonverbal gestures, intonations, and/or facial expressions), c) when to say it (not interrupt...

Perfect, Yes, on one level it is shallow and superficial to offer this advice. What if I had warts and acne all over my face, and looked myself in the mirror and said "I am beautiful"? Outwardly, according to everyone else's definition, I would simply be lying to myself, rendering the advice pointle...

Above all, know this: You exist/were created on this earth, and there is no one else just like you. Ever. That gives you value. Yes, you are valuable! And, you don't have to believe this one, and I don't mean to offend, but I believe it: You were created on purpose, and for a purpose. I was called "...

I would not be offended if someone called me an aspie.

And I do not like fried chicken. I must be the only one who grew up south of the Mason-Dixon line not to like fried chicken. I do like chicked-fried chicken though, no bones!
