I lived in Japan for nigh on 20 years. I'd agree with a lot of what has been written. I've also lived in other countries, and one thing I've learnt is that the commonality of human nature (NT) is the overriding factor. Cultural differences are just behavioural differences - different ways of showing... |

I'm thinking that the line in the specific case is how your life is effected. It's a matter of disability. When an individual can not operate in the way that society expects and the individual's life is constrained by this then it is AS. Of course a full diagnosis is needed for all areas. I'm sure t... |

'spectrum' is a metaphor. We need it to talk about the various autistic challenges and how we display them to the world. One thing I've learnt from this discussion is the fact that the Autistic Spectrum is clinically distinct from the rest fo humanity. And it's digital - admittedly fuzzy-edged but s... |

This mind reading stuff - yes, sometimes people can intuit what another person is feeling or even occasionally thinking but... It's like cold reading - where the guesses that are right are remembered and the guesses that are wrong are not. Plus guesses that might be right but aren't are remembered a... |

How do you do that? What frustrates me is that I don't know a way of disagreeing that will be listened to. The NT 'That's your opinion' tactic or others. |

'We are all somewhere on the spectrum' - Has anybody come across this or similar statement from NT's - usually very 'well-meaning'? A variation I've heard is 'we are all a little bit Autistic'. I'm not talking about 'autistic traits' here, which might well be valid in families with an AS history. Wh... |

Listening to the the answers in the interview, it seems like Cohen when pressed, doesn't deny much of what we are theorizing here: that some people with Autism have greater levels of empathy than others; that some have a great deal of affective empathy without the cognitive empathy; that some have ... |

Ok, SBC has already participated an interview and it is interesting. His POV is nuanced. http://tinyurl.com/3kpadqk A lot of the problem revolves around his definition of empathy But you are right that different theorists may have different definitions of empathy. I don’t suggest mine is the only on... |

I think it's a bit of an aggressive message. We'll be talking to scientists (at least, supposedly). We are interested in discourse first and foremost. I'm afraid such a message would only serve to alienate them from us. Yes, I take your point. I was really thinking of media articles, like the book ... |

We have a right to reply, but what do you think we should do? We could simply start sending e-mails to the relevant papers when they publish something like this, or we could mass-criticise Baron-Cohen's book on Amazon, but neither of those are really an opening to a discussion, which is what we wan... |
