I'm at the beginning of this process. Really, in this culture you need to either succeed or die, and if you can't succeed you need to have the courtesy of dying quickly and quietly.

Happy vs. Joy vs. Excited Angry vs. Mad vs. Annoyed vs. Irritated Sad vs. Depressed Fear vs. Anxiety vs. Paranoid Can someone explain this. I have a very hard time identifying emotions. Certainly! Happy - experiencing pleasure / euphoria / comfort. Joy - experiencing flow . Joy is the experience of...

Not exactly. Sociopathy is a form of utilitarian consequentialist ethics, but all utilitarian consequentialist ethics are not sociopathy. In fact, utilitarian consequentialist ethics which consider other people as intrinsic utilitarian ends are *better* than a Kantian deontological model, from an et...

I always soften anything self-aggrandizing that I say about myself by pointing out a lack, usually using horribly nerdy RPG terms. I.e., "yeah, I decided Charisma was a dump stat, and just poured all my skill points into Perform (Piano)." But truthfully, the best response to give outsiders when you ...

There's a lot of talk about Aspies being inadvertently tactless. But what about the opposite? With both (neurotypical) children and adults I notice there is a lot of saying things that, if written down, would read as extremely cruel. The words, even when lies, seem to be experienced by the neurotyp...

Studies indicate that this is not actually correct - that in fact, in general aggressors have *higher* self-esteem than their victims.

Something that came to my mind just now. We know that aspies have difficulty empathising with people (or if you will, experiencing theory of mind deficits), but can't we same the same of the NT understand of aspie behaviour - that NTs aren't prepared to empathise with aspies? Sure, but who cares? T...

I believe that some people are tactless through no fault of their own - i.e. they do not intend to hurt someone. If a person does feel hurt by what someone says, they should voice it, so that the person who made the comment can learn that what they said was indeed tactless and can perhaps be more c...

A) I would take "tact" to mean trying not to harm or hurt anyone. Do you mean internally or externally? I.e., does someone have 'tact' if they perceive themselves to not be trying to harm or hurt anyone, or do they only have 'tact' if other people perceive them as not trying to harm or hurt anyone?

I find it helpful to think of "disorder" in the same sense that I think of "illegal", "sin", and "disgusting". Let's use homosexuality as an example, because it's a good one. Is homosexuality a mental disorder? Not in our culture. Was it fifty years ago? Yes, definitely. Is homosexuality illegal? no...

Well, but if it sticks, it sticks. What is disability besides a pandering word for ineptitude?

(hint: the real answer is "whatever society says it is". Always look to the people who have the power.)

A set of related questions for the thread: A) When is tact socially effective, and when does using tact make you look weak? More explicitly, what exactly is tact, from an instrumental perspective? B) When does backing down gain you support, and when will backing down backfire? C) How do you gain the...

That's somewhat frustrating. Is there a way to determine which forum is most relevant to a particular question? NT/AS forum possibly? You're asking the vision impaired for photographic imagery here. :? Thank you, I will try that. Hrm, I'm not seeing any such forum listed here; are you suggesting I ...
