I can't speak to the way a Buddhist would interpret this, but as someone who has also admired some of the moral teachings within Buddhism and who has also been an atheist for most of his life, I get where you're coming from. For me, my desire to avoid participation in Buddhist activities is because ...

You're already mis-stating the issue. It should be: Theists claim god exists, atheists claim there is no evidence that god exists. Atheists do not affirm the statement "I believe there is no God" (some do, but as a group they don't), they affirm the statement "I do not believe there is a God". These...

Yes. Just yes. For the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, yes.

In fact, I keep butting heads with the mother-in-law over my "immaturity" because apparently, you're not acting like a grown-up if all you want to talk about is Walking With Dinosaurs.

It seems like you do have those sensory issues, just not the same way of coping with them. I'm a shouter too, and for me it can be over too much movement just as much as too much noise. I also tend to go into that hyper-focus you describe, but I swing back and forth between being distracted by every...

Speaking totally for myself and not implying anything about anyone else... I think so. At least, when I'm "on", I'm really, really going. The sensation of my clothes against my skin stops being irritating and my whole body feels wired like one big genital. The other side is that when I'm having sens...

...it's just that you're being affected by the nature of digital environments. It happened to me a few years ago. You're still going to have the symptoms you had in terms of sensory/social issues, but remember that hyperfocus can be countered by ADD and ADHD-style inability to focus sometimes. Both ...

I have big time auditory/sensory synesthesia: every sound registers as both an auditiory experience and a sensation, especially if I am relaxed. I'm not talking about really loud sounds like a car stereo playing at full volumne and base at the traffic light. I mean if I am sitting or lying on the c...

What you're describing doesn't sound quite healthy. It seems almost like it would be a kind of disassociation, which can have profoundly harmful long-term effects. I've experienced similar problems in the past, although I usually would depersonalize (separate my meat self from my mind self) and the ...

I'm not so sure your representation of faith is any more nuanced or correct than the one you cite. I am sure (having been raised Catholic) that there are a good many Christians who would say that you have that all wrong (like some Protestants, virtually all Catholics, and most Eastern Orthodox Chris...

I do use alcohol to self-medicate, especially for work functions where a small amount of it is being served anyway and people are expected to have a glass of wine in hand. I find anything above 2 works, so I try to stick around 2-3 to keep my wits about me, but the notes up here about anxiety and re...

I think that video misrepresented the 1948 program to you. The goal wasn't to make the Soviets stupider, but to use film and the arts to demonstrate the "superior freedom" they would enjoy under a capitalist democracy. It was part of a psyops technique that would later develop into leaflet dropping ...

I don't do right and wrong unless I'm talking about emotions. I see the difference between what I perceive the world to be and what it is by measuring the difference between the responses I expect to get and the ones I'm actually given. It's a bit like attempting to find dark matter by looking for i...

All. The. Time.

At least 2-3 times a week, I'll think someone is talking to me when they're not. Sometimes I get so embarrassed I can't go back to the location for weeks. I've had people call me a ret*d in public for it before.

I'm of the opposite orientation. The worst possible fear I have is that of being buried alive. I'm extremely claustrophobic, and much like you, I have obsessed on burial from a young age. I have always wanted to be disposed of by fire because NO MATTER WHAT I'm gone then. No nail marks on the inside...

I answered "no that's just silliness" before I thought about it, but now that I've thought about it, it really is just silliness. Unless they prove that autism is solely caused by genetics, it's not safe to make the assumption that it is a selectable trait (or not solely a selectable trait... it cou...
