I think you'll find that it varies from student to student.
My best advice would be to work on a case-by-case basis - understand the specific needs and difficulties of each student. |

At the University of Toronto, we have three levels to choose from - minor, major and specialist. In terms of required credits and intensity of courses, specialist > major > minor. Just thought I'd define that before I begin. Personally, my passions are East Asian Studies, History, Economics, Politic... |

^ I'm exactly the same. I don't think I was even taught long division, since I spent so much time in and out of the Behaviour Unit.
And now I'm a Maths major... |

But on the other side of the coin, if you're just tagging along with your hands in your pockets, it's a truism that many people won't really want to spend time with you. If you want to be a presentable and relatively sociable person, you need to make the effort to learn a few useful conversation sta... |

I've overcome most of my social difficulties, but eye contact continues to elude me. I can do it when there's a decent distance between another person and I, but when they're right up close, I find myself looking at their shirt. It just feels too unnatural to look at their eyes, and I've pretty much... |

Hi Naxax, I hated nearly every moment of school too. It seemed to get in the way of learning. College had moments of fun. There is a reason I homeschooled my three boys. Now that I am older I have come to understand a few things about school. It is for a lot of us, a time of misery and wondering wh... |

If you think about it, there are billions of people in the world, all of whom have different personalities and values. Having a roommate picked out of a hat means that you'll get one of these people, and who they are is up to chance. Because of this, it's often up to chance whether they're a perfect... |

Learning to resolve conflicts with your words is exceedingly more valuable than with your fists. But being someone's punching bag isn't right either. You need to confide in someone you trust, and allow them to assist you. That's the only way it's going to end for good. Chances are you're not going t... |

It was dreadful for the first three years. I was depressed, lonely and isolated. My grades were poor, and I would spend hours and hours on the internet to fill the void where my life should have been. By my final year, I decided that enough was enough. I decided to take control of my life. So, on th... |

I wouldn't even consider it. The last thing I want is any sort of special treatment - whether beneficial or otherwise. I've gotten to University on my own steam, and I plan to get through it in the same way. Like somebody said earlier, the real world offers no special amenities, and I've no intentio... |

Problem solved! I made a call or two, and I can take a Specialist Major in Mathematics and Economics (BSc).
Well, that should make me a bit more marketable. |

My University only offers a BA in Economics, even at the Specialist level. I'm planning to do Graduate School, though. So, I'm hoping that the Maths degree will complement the Economics degree in my Grad School application. I have no idea, though. |

What degrees are useful, then? I went for the prestige in picking Mathematics and Economics; History was the only one I did solely out of interest. |
