Having an AS-brain, what motivates me is my survival and the survival of those I care about. I do not consider anyone to be above or below me, everyone has as much a right to survive. This puts the individual in focus. That is not how NTs look at it. For them, the group is in focus. What matters is...

Oh by the way I'm in Melbourne, Australia, 35, female, enjoys meeting, talking to and hanging out with other Aspies. I'd really like to make a female friend or two around my age who are also AS, especially if like to get out and about and do stuff like watch movies and hang out at art galleries.

Small groups are cool but I actually feel more comfortable hanging out with one or two friends at a time. Would it be possible to organize some kind of AS friendship network where we meet up with one or two new friends at a time, organized on an ad hoc basis? I mean instead of trying to organize a b...

I haven't visited Wrong Planet for ages and just want to say I missed you.

When I think of other Aspies generally I get this warm fuzzy feeling, like you're My People. Does anyone else feel this way?

From my experience (I'm 34), often men - people generally - who lack confidence or have low self esteem end up doing things that hurt people in their lives. Insecurity and weakness can actually result in behaviours that hurt others. For example, lying, betrayal, aggressive or passive-aggressive beha...

If you think about it, the advice to "be fussy but realistic" is totally vague and meaningless. It doesn't actually tell you what constitutes "fussy" and what constitutes "realistic".

That sounds a bit like me. I did a psychology (and other social sciences) degree in Sydney, and then worked for a Commonwealth government department, where we were using lots of ABS statistics. I worked in the research branch and we would get the monthly ABS stats and analyse them and write briefin...

Yes, I can relate to that. I spent over 15 years as an undergrad or postgrad university student, but only have enough completed degrees to account for less than half of that. I kept having to drop out for reasons that I now know were tied to my AS diagnosis. I have poor executive function skills - ...

I used to worry about this constantly as I never knew when I may have been offensive by being truthful. Now, I usually catch it right after I say something and then explain myself to the other party. Thanks for your reply. I find that I offend not just by being truthful, but also by not saying the ...

I studied psychology, and then worked for our national statistical agency. The branch I was in wanted generalists, not specialists, so I had to do a lot of things I felt really uncomfortable with. I transferred to a department that was more "specialist orientated", but had to do a lot of research a...

Do you have a constant fear of offending people? I am constantly worried about having caused offence to someone. I don't think it's an irrational fear, because in the past I have offended people without meaning to and without knowing how I did it, and their unexpected negative responses have given m...

I'd say keep struggling, if you can. I think you may as well attempt the PhD. I kind of wish I had. What would be your other option? You may have the same issues in employment, like I did, so if you don't stick with academics you would need to choose your job wisely anyway. I think I probably will ...
