Forum: Parents' Discussion   Topic: how do your kids decribe sensory overload?

Probably too late, but my son describes one aspect of sensory overload as people's speaking "sounding like buzzing".
He has also said that when people touch him, the information in his brain gets jumbled up.
Good luck with your writing!

My 8-year has been doing GREAT this year in 3rd grade and at home. Less meltdowns, more flexible, getting along with friends. We have had hiccups, but overall major progress. Every now and then though, something happens and we have one of those "Here comes the real ASD" days. This weekend ...

^^ Thank you! Good info. Met with the principal today and discussed their reasoning and our options. It actually went quite well. They really do want to find what works best for him, which was reassuring. It's great being at the same school as my child, but it does sometimes make navigating issues t...

Thanks for the support and ideas! Our situation is a bit more complicated, as it is private school AND I work at the school as a teacher. For now, their solution is for ME to be his aide during lunch/recess (the trigger times). Takes away one planning period for me but their resources are limited. I...

That makes sense and is probably the answer! I was worried (as was his teacher) that this was some strange seizure/blacking out thing. Now, days later, he says he does remember biting, just not what happened leading up to that. He knows he was being harrassed, he just can't put into words what was s...

That's good to hear. Don't see the light yet . . . but there must be one. We may need to get started with some more focused therapy/plan again. Kind of feeling like one step forward, two steps back right now.

Does it go without saying that a second grade child with ASD who is having incidents where he gets physical needs to be more closely supervised than an average child (during less structured time at school anyway) even if he does not need other extra support? I agree with this, also. Supervision hel...

My son had a boy in 2nd grade that he had issues with, too. They eventually moved the other boy out of the class. I agree with Waterfalls that 2nd grade gets very tough socially. Our son was never able to recall these incidents accurately even when adults said it was instigated by the other boy. I ...

Commenting on this because my son just started 2nd grade and has had an incident of aggression which is leading to an IEP change and consequences (has to go to counseling during Friday free time). Seems like 2nd grade is a key time for this issue to revive. In general, he is not aggressive, but I do...

Is he having blackouts when aggressive? Determine this by asking if he remembers and to recall what happened during that time period. If he can't then he is blacking out. Has he ever had seizures or lights are too much for him? Was he ever beaten or bullied? Does he understand the rules of sports a...

No, this kid has definitely been provoking him. The teacher even knows that. However, I believe this child also has some undiagnosed issues. He (the child) is leaving next week, thankfully for my son's sake. For now, they both have been advised to not play with each other during recess. Doesn't help...

Hi all, I have not been on here for about a year. Mainly because I've been busy, partly because things have been going fairly well with our son and I just didn't have extra time to get online much (new job, etc.) Anyway, my son is 7, diagnosed ASD (HFA), Dysgraphia, and possibly something else going...

We have some big changes this summer too. Moving countries, starting 1st grade, etc. My son sounds similar to yours--I think I've had that thought before. We are making a memory book. I bought a nice art pad/journal--kind that has hard cover and is ring bound. I bought a set of really nice colored p...

For me, there's a 'little bit' of truth in many of the theories, even the ones we may think of as 'crazy'. Of course, to much dust in your house does NOT cause autism. However, an overload of various types of polluted air could increase toxic response and exacerbate the behavior of someone genetical...

I am not an Aspie, but this has been a lifelong phobia of mine. I am 39, and still wake up in the middle of the night and want to check the door locks or investigate noises (or not). It doesn't worry me every night, but when it does . . . whew. The only thing that has helped me is to make sure I do ...

Just so you don't feel alone . . . I have wondered about this too. My son is almost 6. Has off/on heard things and seen things--what I would think are either hallucinations or a very vivid imagination. He gets frightened easily and can't shake images. He also can be in his own little world and so I ...
