Thank you so much for sharing, and for saying this. We are open about our child's autism, and while there are views on "how young is too young, what if child uses autism as excuse not to try, etc." -- we speak about autism very freely in the house (we don't use code words, we don't say "A word", etc... |

Ilka -- That is amazing that your daughter can now identify the trigger! Thanks for sharing this with us, I'm definitely going to keep this in mind as my child grows as well. I'm also wondering if this isn't the reason why some parents have their children receive cognitive behavioral therapy as the ... |

I'm surprised OT doesn't suspect this is sensory when you look at the behaviors: - hair touching (texture) - kicking at home (sensory input) - blowing raspberries (this may be sensory -- lips together and coming apart in rapid succession) - the actual noises may be tics of some kind, for example, so... |

Thank you for your responses! Our ABA team is working on "working memory" with our child (more along the lines of, "what did we just do?"), and it does seem like a continuing issue with him. I don't want to keep stressing him by testing him if this is something he's still developing a level of skill... |

I'm curious, what were you looking for that the book didn't provide? I've paid more for an ebook (by a speech therapist, $37 but I thought it was informative and therefore accepted the cost) -- it's more about the value of the information contained versus # of pages or format (ebook, paperback, what... |

I subscribe to the philosophy that "we use his special interests to teach him skills" -- so my kid likes machines (such as vacuums, fans) and we don't really interfere with what some people would call "perseverations." However, we also look at whether the extent of his special interest may interfere... |

Possibly a stimming behavior -- the ABA people need to identify all possible functions of the behavior in order to identify the right course of action for it. If this is happening in a specific environment or situation it may be triggered as part of his anxiety response to the stimuli in that enviro... |

My child's almost 5 and was diagnosed when he was almost 4. He is now receiving home based ABA (focusing primarily on Natural Environment Teaching or NET) and responding extremely well. His language is increasing and we see him initiating an interaction. Compared with even a year ago when he limited... |

Agreed re: risks of SSRI-class drugs (prozac, paxil, zoloft, celexa) for young children and teens -- this is a 'class' effect meaning drugs within the same class can be "activating" even for adults. However the original poster said she believes prozac is indeed helping her son's anxiety in visible w... |

PersonalEnigma -- do you think cognitive behavior therapy on top of Prozac may help the symptoms of anxiety? I think your son is old enough to gain some benefit from CBT -- and CBT combined with a medication as a treatment plan may help your son both with the immediate symptoms of anxiety as well as... |

Some thoughts I had while reading this... and it sounds very scary to me -- having black outs like that and completely "losing" one's place in time and space -- I believe that your son is not pretending to do this to get out of trouble: -- change in meds may be an issue: dosage of meds, formulation ... |

I read that letter too, discussed it with spouse. We ultimately chose to say our child "has" autism, versus "is" autistic. I have a brain wired for depression. I refer to myself as "having depression", I don't call myself "depressive." Our philosophy, which not all subscribe to, is that we are more ... |

Maybe the key is not 'talking' about it. Many kids can't use language adequately (even NT kids) to process complex issues like grief and loss. Heck, we adults have a hard time "talking" through profound loss and grief, we can't expect children to express theirs the same way. One method I thought abo... |

Step, It really sounds to me like you are doing all that you can to be supportive to both your AS spouse and AS step-son and that you had been tireless in your efforts. One thing that did strike me is not just the isolation (basically you and your spouse are "it" in terms of Seth's social life) -- b... |

I'd also add that one of the evaluations needs to be a full functional behavioral analysis. Something's going on with reading, and a behavioral psychologist can pinpoint reason(s) why your DD may be melting down and avoiding reading even when she's shown a love of learning. I don't have warm fuzzy f... |

I agree with the suggestion of regression -- but on top of the regression I wonder if something new is a factor, something that has not been found or uncovered. Did anything new change recently? I'm talking about combing through every detail of home/school including any dietary changes, even changes... |
