Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Aspies saying they're Austic without context.

I tend to identify as autistic and if asked for more detail (or if it seems contextually appropriate) will clarify that with the term aspergers. I agree with others that say that it's all the same thing. It's just variance between which things are more problematic, and severity is not always apparen...

This strongly illustrates what I've always thought about the topic as well. The thing is, all people have 'impairments' however you wish to define that, but in a society where NT people share the same 'impairments' those are not regarded as impairments, just 'being human' as the saying goes. Strengt...

The importance of taking a medication at specific times is inversely proportional to its biological half-life. The quicker it's processed by the body, the more import it is to take it at the right times to prevent spikes and dips. Prozac has a very long half life, taking it the same time every day i...

Yes reduction of motivation does have it's purposes, funny thing is it seems to increase my motivation to do things like my laundry, cleaning the room at my moms house I am living in and helping out with cleaning at my friends house.......but yeah it does slow me down which allows me to relax and t...

There have been times when I have gotten stoned rather than acting on suicidal thoughts, I think getting stoned was the better option...so if anything it can reduce the motivation for suicide and the depressed feelings. It certainly does reduce motivation, which is in fact the defining characterist...

Not true. I have been researching cannabis for 10 years, down to manipulating chemical combinations using RASMol and other molecular building programs., as well as reading real studies (all done outside of the USA). All the active ingredients in cannabis have corresponding receptors in the body, an...

I'm AS and ADHD-PI as well. One of the conflicts that is most obvious in my life is actually where boredom and routine interact. My bf is almost certainly AS (undiagnosed) and always does things in certain patterns. My patterns habitually include some form of randomness, because otherwise I get bore...

ALL prescription antidepressants can cause depression and thoughts of suicide, says so right on the label. So can pot and essentially every psychoactive substance. Effects are particularly less predictable in neurodiverse people, for what should be an obvious reason... Prozac has been really helpfu...

I remember reading (though don't recall where) a pretty good analysis of AD/HD people and adrenaline seeking. As aghogday said, it focused on imbalance in AD/HD neurochemistry, and that adrenaline seeking was a personality adaptation that balanced it better. Many on the spectrum share AD/HD traits s...

I suggest you shouldn't assume that Cordelia Fine wrote this book based on assumptions. Is it not arrogant to do so? I assure you she didn't do that. She's not assuming anything. And she uses lots of endnotes to show where she got her information. Those who desire and verify it. She also very much ...

I am having trouble trying to picture a scenario where a card would be helpful. Really how would it be helpful. Can someone give an example where one was helpful. Telling a nurse etc you have ASD and might behave in ways that are unusual. Being arrested, or stopped by security for behaving suspicio...

If you read Cordelia Fine's book, you'll find she debunks a lot of research that claims significant biologically originated differences between men and women. Also, it seems kind of arrogant to suggest that all those animals' gendered behavioral differences are biological, and not, say, social. A l...

Given the commonality of gendered behavioural differences in essentially EVERY animal, it would be simply arrogant to assume humans are THE exception to what is a biological norm. Many aspects are surely cultural, taught, socialised, etc, there's little doubt about that. But to assume there are no m...

I'd just like to point out that many psychologists also believe that if you have any friends, you can't have AS. Some also believe that AS is only something children can have. One of the first psychs I saw said that within the first 15 minutes (then proceeded to ignore the adhd diagnosis rules too)...

I do the same, basically all the time, often evaluating multiple scenarios and how I'll respond to each of them. If I'm distracted (by thinking about the next bus for example) and stop considering how I'll deal with the social interaction, I usually end up freezing briefly while I mentally try to ca...
