Yes, but I never understand when it's appropriate. This is perhaps the most debilitating aspect of my NVLD. It seems as if neurotypical people were born with an innate filter that tells them when a situation demands a passive, assertive or aggressive response. I have been told my entire life that I...

I drink for a few reasons. Like others, I feel more like other people when I'm drinking...I'm not as socially distant. Also, it gets my brain to shut off so that I don't constantly have a thousand thoughts zapping through my brain . Plus, I like the taste of beer and wine. This is exactly why I dri...

I don't know about you, but I am really becoming tired of this word "mild". According to these psychologists/friends/parents, if you are even the slightest bit successful in life then you are only allowed to have an extremely mild case. But how can you use terms such as these to describe a disorder ...

I voted yes. I was dropped on my head as a child and fractured my skull.

[quote="scarp"]Is ASMR what makes me briefly break out in shivers sometimes while listening to music or TV shows through headphones? It sends a very vivid tingling sensation down through the back of my head and spine, causing me to have to "shake it off" suddenly and involuntarily. It sort...

I don't know why, but I sometimes can't help but smile sometimes in bad situations. It's not that I'm happy that something bad takes place, but my face just shows a smile. My mom would comment on how I showed a smirk sometimes when she was upset with me, which made her more upset. My theory is that...

Nothing you have said is inconsistent with NVLD, least of all the time and processing issues. In fact, the fact that these issues show up in Aspergers as well is simply because most people with Aspergers have NVLD on top of all the autistic stuff. You may well have both. But ability to do math does...

It's not uncommon for someone with dyscalculia to have difficulty with arithmetic but do well in more theoretical math such as calculus. This is a good point. Arithmetic and the higher mathematics are much different beasts. However, I don't think that I have dyscalculia because, when given sufficie...

Yes, however, when you are overwhelmed by other stimuli (body language, etc.), it is impossible to be able to keep auditory instructions straight, especially if they involve steps or lists. Your inability to visualize, conceptualize things in space, etc. with NVLD prevents you from being able to un...

Might I ask what were the circumstances in which you were diagnosed with NVLD? I was having significant difficulty with work (and moderate difficulty before that), and was referred to a neuropsychologist for suspected Asperger's Disorder. And what was the person's basis for diagnosing you with it? ...

Why would you want to change your diagnosis? Self-validation? To get better/more appropriate accommodation? More a matter of curiosity than any of those, really. I was worried about the accommodations at first, seeing as NVLD isn't technically in the DSM-IV or DSM-V, but there have been no problems...

I was diagnosed with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder in April of last year, and have been questioning the accuracy of the diagnosis ever since. I do realize that I need not meet every single criterion to merit a diagnosis, but I am talking about two of the "hallmark" criteria of NVLD which I overwhelmi...

I was on Effexor for several years and to be honest, in hindsight, I felt no real difference. When I came to the conclusion that I would like to see what life was like without them, the withdrawal symptoms were horrendous. While on them I had some side effects like weight gain and it totally remove...

I too hate when people leave morsels of food strewn in disarray across their plate. Often times I will deliberately reposition objects such that they obstruct my view of the mess (much to the confusion of my tablemates).

This is a good post. I interpret it as an extension of the vagueness surrounding the terms "sub-clinical" versus "clinical". For me, the question remains; can one be sub-clinical throughout childhood, only to be classified as a clinical case in adulthood when faced with different challenges? One cla...

The key might be that you can understand people you know, but not strangers. This suggests that anxiety and performance pressure might be related to the problem. Have you tried "not trying"? Letting your conscious mind get out of the way, and focus on nothing while they speak, and don't try to anal...
