I got vocational help from the state. The counselors were very nice and caring people but the onus is on you to know what you want out of life. I had a lot of difficulty figuring this out so I used my therapist to help organize my thoughts. I thought long and hard about learning to drive a truck. I...

I don't think I'll ever be able to hold down a typical job as I have both Asperger's and a significant hearing loss. As a result of these two conditions, interpersonal communication and relationship building are nearly impossible for me, as is working on a team. I also become very stressed in most w...

My experience with voc rehab was mixed. Although my counselors were good people who really cared about me and worked to try and find me a good job, they didn't really understand the impact that something like autism plays on the whole getting and keeping a job thing. To make a long story short, I or...

I too have more than one interest or obsession. My primary one is meteorology, but I have others in geography, geology, chess, and plants/trees. I went to college and grad school to study meteorology, but I was unable to find employment in that field due to the scarcity of jobs and fierce competitio...

If one of your parents is receiving social security payments through either retirement or disability, you can apply as a disabled adult child (DAC) if you were found disabled before age 22. The amount of money you get would be based on the highest earning parent, and may pay you more than SSI does. ...

I should also add that I do think earning a Master's would improve my chances of finding a job in meteorology that doesn't entail me sitting on my ass for minimum 9 hours every day... one of the major aspects of this job I can't stand either. Wrong. In fact, it's probably the opposite. Sorry to say...

Is anyone on here or knows someone who is on SSDI Disabled Adult Child? Assuming you qualify, I guess you can get it if your parents are receiving SS benefits through either disability or retirement. Unlike SSI, it is not asset based meaning that you can save the money and have more than $2000 in as...

You definitely need to know how to work well with a group as a lot of higher paying professional jobs are very collaborative and team oriented. This is probably far more important than the skills needed for the job itself.

I recently quit a job as a software engineer because it was not what I expected it to be. I was anticipating a quiet job in a cubicle writing code by myself most of the time, but that's not what it is at all. Rather, software engineering is a highly collaborative profession that requires a large amo...

Hi all: I just got a temp job prepping documents to be scanned. Some of you may be interested in something like this if there is a document scanning facility in your town/city. Every day, I get a banker's box full of folders and I have to sort them and prep them according to specific instructions. ...

I was just offered a job at a company that has a business casual dress code, but I wore a suit to the interview. It's always safest to wear a suit when interviewing for a white collar, corporate job. Besides a lot of businesses in midtown Manhattan are probably fairly formal, so I'd go with a suit a...

Absolutely, especially if you're good with logical reasoning and math. Programming involves being able to think like a computer does, which is in black and white terms (i.e. Boolean logic). You can take courses at a local college, online, or on your own. If you want a more structured environment and...

Good idea! I was wondering the same thing, except for software engineering. There are lot of people on the spectrum who are good programmers who have not been able to get hired due to the challenges associated with being on the spectrum. The challenge is starting such a business. I have no idea how ...

I'm 31 and am trying to break into the workforce as well. I have a bachelor's and master's degree in meteorology that are essentially useless, so I went back to community college to learn computer programming in Java and C++. I finished up my courses in May and am now applying for some jobs. Problem...
