It sounds like Dysgraphia. Besides a developmental specialist, you can push for the Dyslexia specialist to test him. They can test for Dysgraphia besides just Dyslexia. I hope you can get this problem sorted soon so his anxiety can calm down. |

Welcome to wp!! I look forward to hearing everyone else's responses. My son has a thing for all things mechanical. (That's what prompted my mom and SIL's suspicions about AS.) All kids have interests, and yes, sometimes obsessions. My son loves going to new places because he enjoys them, but also lo... |

I understand your wondering if you over presented or underpresented your son on the ADRI. I think I may have underpresented mine in the hopes that he would not show up as AS. But on the ADOS, he didn't even come close. Like someone has said, you can't really fake being Autistic. I think it's safe to... |

Yay!! Let me know how it works out for you!! The idea behind the chicken monkey giraffe is that our brains will recognize the shapes of words as well. Think about how when you are driving and you see an exit sign with a road name, even when you are miles away from it, you know what it says. Part of ... |

I would say, that for now, let it be. You've told your sister what you think, it's out there, now it's up to her what she does from here. I was on the receiving end from my sister-in-law and mom. Up until they said something, I didn't suspect anything wrong with my son, but since he's my first born ... |

Some of my students with the worst print to brilliantly with cursive and really enjoy it!! Also, if he is reading well then it's likely not Dyslexia, however it could be Dysgraphia. Handwriting without Tears is a great program. I've had other students use it and really get a lot from it!! He really ... |

Again, I don't know that your niece really has an ASD or if she's just not had good structure. The butt wiping thing is something that takes lots of practice and small kids tend to mess up on that a lot!! (Hence why I have my four year old really clean his bum well with a washcloth and mild soap in ... |

(((HUGS)))! !! I hope you guys got through it!! One thing I did with my oldest when he started school that really helped was giving him something special of mine to wear and play with when he felt anxious or scared. He would be fine when he first got there, but when he'd lay down for nap, he'd miss ... |

Yes, how is she with peers and other people? Also, besides AS it could be some OCD/anxiety, which can be comorbid with ASD, but can also be separate. Also, yeah, check into Sensory Processing Disorder. I would defintely get an evaluation going. Like a pp said, you've nothing to lose and a lot to gai... |

While my kids are NT, we still had to question if we wanted another child after the birth of our first because of a genetic blood disorder between my husband and I. We knew that any subsequent children had a 100% chance of having the blood disorder NAIT, while I was pregnant with them. Once they are... |

Mirror writing is common at this age. Forming letters is important, though. One thing you can practice with your son is called "Sky Writing." When you are teaching him the proper form, stand up in front of him with your arm out and who him how to write the letter in a big way. Make sure he is using ... |

Does your sister think she has an ASD? I wouldn't necessarily say she has an ASD and that's why she's acting the way she does. It sounds more to me like she has had a very unstable early childhood, hence the acting out, clinginess, etc. Little consistency can lead to a lot of the behaviors you are d... |

A parent (or a teacher) tends to say, "He/She knows better," to mean this is something I thought I explained (usually more than once) and I thought he/she understood this because I quizzed him/her and he/she repeated the words back to me. Then the parent or teacher gets upset because the child repe... |

Also, we assume that kids know things, but they really don't. I will assume that my students understand all the words I am saying while I am teaching, but I'm amazed constantly by the words they really don't know or understand....words that are fairly simple, like "gather" or "village." Because they... |

I don't think acting before thinking is just an ASD thing. As a teacher of fourth graders, I see them do stupid things all the time, or not think before they react. Sometimes they still do things on purpose, just to get a rise out of their friend, even when they know they are doing wrong. Especially... |

Absolutely. I can't say I'm glad my sister-in-law brought this up, but at the same time, I am. It made me pay more attention to both of my children, to things that I otherwise wouldn't have noticed. It also made me learn more about our SpEd system, where I didn't have experience before. (Not really,... |
