What is pretending to be normal about?

I haven't read it, but I really want to. It's about a woman who's diagnosed with Asperger's as an adult, when her daughter is diagnosed. You can read an excerpt here:

You may have already read these, but the top three that come into my head are: _Look Me in the Eye_, _Pretending to Be Normal_, and _The Journal of Best Practices_. The last one is about a man who learns he has Asperger's 5 years into married life, and all the things he does as a result in order to ...

Wow, thanks for the link to that chart. I also identify with a lot of the traits.

Out of curiosity, how many girls with Asperger's feel they are "asexual"? I've just never had much interest in guys OR girls.

I hate buying new shoes. I find most shoes very uncomfortable until I've broken them in, and I tend to have meltdowns faster in shoe stores than anywhere else.

That's cool (that you made some good friends there!). I've noticed that a lot of my students who are mostly mainstreamed but do have IEP's are pretty close friends with each other, but almost no one wants others to know they are in special ed. That's totally understandable, and as a teacher I do my...

I'm not really qualified to respond, but I know that a lot of medications have unwanted side effects and, frankly, aren't that good for you. So if I was you, I would go with my gut feeling and seek a second or even third opinion before accepting the bipolar medication. Maybe ask around semi-locally ...

There is an episode of _Glee_ where a girl pretends to have Asperger's because she wants to insult people and then say, "Sorry, I have Asperger's, I can't help saying what's on my mind." Then when she gets really mad, though, and wants the coach to understand just how furious she actually is, she in...

I'm also wondering if I have Asperger's. I can relate to a lot of the things you posted, such as pacing and talking to yourself. When I was a child I would walk around in circles for hours making up stories in my head, but I would mutter them aloud, especially when people weren't around. However, I ...

Wow, this is really interesting. I never knew that about the "short bus" being code for something derogatory either. But then, I never went to public school. I was homeschooled until high school, and I wonder if I'd been in school if I'd have received a diagnosis of Asperger's or at least social anx...

Thanks everyone! I think I'll just keep a log for now of things I do that seem spectrum-like and read lots of posts so I get a sense of this community. I'm so glad I found this place, it's awesome! And whether I have Asperger's or not, I relate to a lot of what I'm reading here and I'm sure I can le...

Hi, I am a public middle/high school teacher, possible Aspie, and would love to get people's feedback on how you feel about special ed, whether you are/were in it or not. How would you have/do you want your teachers to respond to you and any situations that might come up with your being on the spect...

Thanks for starting this topic! I am also looking into a possible diagnosis of Asperger's (for myself) and don't think I have any qualitative difficulties with eye contact. Well, I have to force myself to do it when I don't like someone or when I feel uncomfortable in a situation, but I don't think ...
