My son just finished his first semester at college, and it has turned out to be a really good experience so far. He had many challenges in high school (ADD inattentive, then experienced seizures that required medication that severely affect cognition), and he was a good student, but right up until t... |

My son is currently finishing up his first semester at college, so we have limited knowledge. Here's what I think has helped our son so far .... 1. First of all, he has gone to a small college. I highly recommend Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. There are around 1200 TOTAL students, and a good ... |

I was just reading another thread, and I am fascinated by the concept of extroverted Aspies that was mentioned in this other thread. We dropped my son off at a college in Indiana that is very Aspie-friendly (it's Earlham College). This is a school that doesn't really have a program for kids on the s... |

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I have a son who has a similar problem to yours. He has inattentive ADD, and he fights the urge to fall asleep a lot, although I've never seem him actually FALL ASLEEP while studying. I think he just loses attention and drifts off mentally, or he briefly nods off, b... |

Keep plugging away. You NEVER know when your son is going to suddenly "get it". I too thought, at age nine, that my son just wasn't getting the bigger picture. He did fine with non-fiction, but trying to get the general "gist" of a fictional story was not within his grasp. We just kept at it and at ... |

CLMANSF, I can tell you from experience that what you are feeling about your son is NORMAL. Your son doesn't act like other kids, heck, he doesn't act like YOUR OWN other kids -- and you have to adapt to the way he is. You know that. It's just hard! I just said goodbye to my ASD child yesterday -- h... |

I second the Pittsburgh idea. It sounds like possibly the perfect place for you. Sports is very big here -- as my kids were growing up, they would announce the Steeler's upcoming games and final scores in the ELEMENTARY SCHOOL! It was hilarious! Everybody gets into it, and being into it provides an ... |

I have watched over the years my husband's experience at work. While he is not an Aspie, he works with MANY aspie types. I think as an industry, Environmental Science/engineering must be a haven for people on the spectrum. It seems like there are about half and half, meaning half potentially aspie p... |

Thanks, everybody, for your replies. I have hope for this college, in that I've contacted other parents who had kids going to this college, and they said that their kids' experiences were for the most part very positive. They felt accepted for maybe the first time in their lives, and there was a lot... |

I keep telling my high school senior, who has had a relatively OK high school life, that college will be better. And then I wondered, is college honestly better for people on the spectrum? I'm making an assumption that over time, the kids in college are somewhat more mature and may be more inclined ... |

Maybe what you could do is: 1) invite a group of friends out for a drink or to a concert -- that way you're not the only source of entertainment 2) go out somewhere rather than to your home -- it's more of an "event" that way 3) find something to do with friends that is something you can all "discov... |

My high school senior does relatively well in school, but right now he has an old teacher teaching environmental science who: 1. Gives verbal instructions about when tests and quizzes will occur 2. Depends a lot on videos, which my son tends to miss a lot of that info Because of these two things, wh... |

I've lived in California when my son was five, and it was HORRENDOUS. I would never suggest living in California and expecting services from the school for your ASD child. We moved purposely from California to Pittsburgh, PA, and it is WONDERFUL here. Lots of very smart and effective programs for wo... |

Five months ago my 17 year old had his 2nd grand mal seizure (other one happened 6 months before, we thought it was a fluke). He was given Lamictal for the seizures. He also takes a rather large combination of Vyvanse/Concerta to help his ADD inattentive problems. He's a senior in high school, prepa... |
