I have two main vices: 1) Photography, especially astrophotography. The money spent on telescopes, lenses, cameras, filters, autoguiders, computers, cables, software and above all a tracking mount really adds up over time. However, the cost of my semi-dark sky shooting location (a "summer cabin" up ...

Of course they're after our money. Not just stores, but colleges, the health care industry, brokers, utilities, school districts, real estate agents, banks, and above all the government -- in fact, just about everybody.

For a while in the mid to late 1960s, I hoarded US silver quarters and dimes, as they were disappearing from circulation. I still have them -- fortunately, they don't take up too much space. I suppose I should start hoarding US nickels now (like Kyle Bass). Too bad I missed out on the copper pennies...

Just the other day I went to Home depot (or Lowes?) looking for teflon grease. I found the WD40 etc, but no luck with the DuPont Teflon grease. It's amazing how hard it is to find something as simple as this without a search engine. After wandering around for 15 minutes or more, I just gave up. Mayb...

I rarely take photos with people anymore -- mostly just astrophotos, closeups, and other unusual shots (like fireflies, startrails, etc.)

I used to collect coins from about 1958 to the late 1990s. It was mostly a type collection of US coins. Eventually, the coins I needed (mostly early gold and silver types) got too expensive. I finally gave up after getting my first (and only) early $5 gold coin -- the price was high back then but it...

I think Ulysses would be much more impressive if he left out all the spaces between the words, too.

Aside: Back when I was little, before I could read, I thought the spaces between typed words looked ugly. Solid blocks of letters looked much nicer to me.

I guess I'm a foreign language dummy, too. My theory is that when English is your native language, its almost pidgin-like simplicity spoils you and dumbs down the language centers in your brain. Later on, when you study some foreign language, you're overwhelmed with all the complexity. Only folks wi...

Actually, in recent years, I've become more interested in investments in general. My goal is to avoid losing all my savings, if we really are headed for a finincial Armageddon in the near future here in the U.S. There's so much conflicting advice out there these days. I don't know if this qualifies ...

Avoiding rush hour traffic is always nice. In the mornings, I usually leave at first light to beat the rush hour, especially in the summer.

The upside is that it may save 5 minutes getting to work.

The downside is that you are probably more likely to hit a deer at that time.

I definitely suffer from expensive obsessions/hobbies. I started collecting coins from circulation around 1958. Later this morphed into collecting older (expensive) US type coins. Eventually, I became more and more interested in US Gold coins (even more expensive). By the time my main interest switc...

hiya and welcome to our neat little club 8) i wish i coulda done like you and settled into a nice comfortable [and well-paid] niche in an area of expertise. I was lucky to get my first summer job in 1966, since it led to the permanent job at the same company. I was also very lucky to get a job with...
