Personally I do not see what gives a gov. the right to extort money from its citizens. How is taxation "extortion?" IMHO, what gives the govt the supposed "right" to tax, even in small amounts, is the need for the government to provide public services to us, such as say schools and/or infrastructur... |

Worker's councils do not work. The Soviets in the USSR were no more than tools led by oligarchs who were loyal to Lenin and Stalin--to give people a false sense of democracy and hope. When the cult of persona surrounding the dictators was high enough, they were abolished as they were simply no long... |

The problem with the US isn't capitalism. Yes, it is. For that matter, it's a problem every country faces. As for labor unions, they were actually illegal in the early United States. Strikes were forbidden. Later, after unionization was legalized (after much struggle from below), capitalist and gov... |

People are not equal, never were and never will be. Is this not a blanket statement? If one doesn't like the unfairness, one can revolt. Indeed. Ever sine 2008's economic crash, people have realized or are realizing this to a certain degree, IMHO. We don't have to live under this [capitalist] syste... |

I think this thread deserves a serious discussion of Marxism. No, I do not care about living standards in modern Russia in comparison to the USSR. It doesn't matter. What matters is a real debate, a fresh analysis of Marxism and so forth. Feel free to go into the Marsh if you want to-I won't stop y... |

I don't see why leftists would ever want to be connected to socialism. As a socialist (in the Marxist sense of the word) I believe that leftists should be associated with the word, even in America where it is used in smear campaigns to attack the "left." IMHO, a major issue is the lack of an organi... |

Thanks for the advice.
If they don't seem interested in talking, or if they don't recognize me (as in they forgot who I was), would it be socially acceptable to simply leave the conversation? |

I knew this person I had in several courses that I tried to be friends with but rarely got the chance to talk to them. I have passed them in the hall several times and each time feel like walking up and saying hi. How should I go about this? Would it be fine to walk up and say something along the li... |

So she can never understand that guys use her for sex and kissing, If this is true, then it's disgusting that they would do that to her. They have no right to "use" her like tissue paper. As a friend (her only friend?), be yourself around her. Maybe she'll talk to you more and actually realize that... |

The Soviet Union lasted a bit over 70 years, approximately two generations. Just the fact that it lasted for over seventy years is something of an accomplishment, don't you think? it was treated as a pariah by the Western industrialized countries for almost all its existence. Hence why it was also ... |

There is substantial evidence to support the idea that rich peasants (kulaks) were resistant to [forced] collectivization. Before collectivization (which I am in no way defending), they owned "24 or more acres, or had employed farm workers." They were more or less reluctant to give up their land or ... |

Please, you're a Marxist/Socialist, a fan of the one ideology that has MURDERED more people in cold blood than every other ideology throughout the history of the world. No, it hasn't. the 100 million people death toll is highly exaggerated. For example, Stalin, (if we are to put the blame *entirely... |

and then you follow that by saying that capitalism saved itself through the violent putting down of rebellion. In order to do that, we'd have to have significant rebellions to put down, but you deny that the closest thing we have to a rejection even counts. We have had many rebellions to put down. ... |

I mean, the prediction of the inevitable collapse of capitalism due to its inherent contradictions has not been realized, they have not been realized in the last 150 years, and predictions of their realization seem no more plausible than they do at any other period of time, That's the thing. Social... |

Marxism has been thoroughly debunked, discredited and refuted by any practical test. It simply does not work. ] I disagree. If by any "practical test" you mean the Soviet Union or any of the successive states that appeared elsewhere in the world, then I believe that you would be mistaken. The Sovie... |

I think that the modern United States, far from being founded on 'capitalist values,' isn't free. Furthermore, I think the name of this thread is misplaced(no offense to the OP). Assuming that freedom is an illusion(which it is IMHO), we can't truly kill in the name of freedom. You can't kill for so... |
