There is so much information coming in from a speaker that I try to assess as the communication is happening. If I have to look in the eyes, I lose everything else, especially what is being said. As a speech pathologist, you are probably interested in having the subject look at the mouth to get the...

Thank you everyone for your insightful replies! I got into another argument with a colleague today over the importance of eye contact and I found it very frustrating, so I can only imagine what it must be like to be on your side of the fence. I keep being told that eye contact is important "because ...

oh , is this the reason they are so comfortable then? It's true! I wouldn't even think to pay attention to someone's eye colour when I'm having a conversation with them. It's difficult to describe, because eye contact is something I never think about when it's happening naturally - and even when I ...

It's tricky, because obviously I come from a background where I'm supposed to assume that behaving as close to NT as possible is the goal and while I do understand that it's much, much easier to get by in the world if you can fake being "normal" and I do think it's important that children who don't ...

Hi everyone, My name is Lana and I'm a (NT) speech pathologist/speech therapist/speech-language pathologist, whatever you want to call it. I became a member here when I was still a student, because I wanted to get a better understanding of what life was like for people with ASD, rather than just tak...

NT's are like that a lot - not just to Aspies, but to everyone. I'm NT and I understand exactly what you're going through - it happens to me all the time. I thinkI'm a nice person and I'm friendly, but I'm very shy and people often mistake that for rudeness and exclude me. It hurts a lot to find out...

I'm NT but I do have social phobia - it's a LOT better than it used to be, but dating is still terrifying for me. I've had two 'relationships' that lasted for about 2 months each, but they were both pretty casual I'm not sure they were actual relationships. I am slowly getting better, but considerin...

I don't emulate actors as such, but if I'm having a particularly bad day and feel more anxious than usual I might pretend to be a character from a book/tv show/movie etc who's a lot more confident than me. It gets me through those days when I have to go to the supermarket but can't face the idea of ...

I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I was just curious about the way assessment and diagnosis works in different countries. I've been told conflicing things about what happens here (Australia) but it's my understand that a multidisciplinary team is recommended, including a pediatrician, sp...

If you haven't yet, I'd mention something about how everyone's different. Might sound obvious, but I think it's good to put in to remind us NT's that just because someone's an aspie doesn't mean we can know everything about them from reading a guide like this!

I wonder if it has something to do with the types of people who are more willing to accept differences in others. I'm not Aspie, but I've got social phobia. The friends I had at school were always the outcasts who had something 'wrong' with them or just didn't fit in. We bonded because we were diffe...

NT interaction is a weird thing. I didn't realise how many stupid pointless things I did every day until I came here! Aspie_chav, I think it's a generalisation to say that NT socialising is warfare. Some of it definitely is, but I don't socialise with people to get ahead. I was the kid at school who...

I'm NT but with social phobia so I've always found group interaction difficult. I don't tend to talk much in group situations till I know the people, but I've found that smiling a lot and nodding and agreeing at appropriate points makes it seem as though I'm interested in the conversation but just n...

Pug, I just finished reading 'Magician' by Raymond Feist and have to ask - is your username related to that series?

Thanks for the welcome! A speech pathologist basically helps people to communicate, though we also help people with swallowing difficulties. As you can imagine, it's a massive field - everything from adults who have had strokes to children with cochlear implants to people with voice disorders. And, ...
