My brother was diagnosed when he was around 8 years old. It could have been younger, I'm not 100% sure. My parents did not tell anyone. They didn't tell him, and they didn't tell me or my other siblings. He is now almost 30, and was only just told very recently. I don't think it is fair not to tell ...

Having a brother who was never told (he was only just told at age 28, even though his diagnosis was at 8 years old) I think it is so important to share it with your kid as soon as possible. My brother is very upset now that he's just been told... there is a lot of anger and hurt. I like your idea ab...

Thanks all. Hopefully I can address your questions here.... some answers overlap, so my goal is to cover them all even if I'm not addressing it in your personal section. autismdad2011 - It was important to bring this up now because his daily life is suffering. In fact, the only reason my father told...

I respect you for taking this into serious consideration. I don't think it would be an easy task. My DD is in a special school for HFA, and we fought the school district tooth and nail to get her placed there. It is a private school, but the school district pays for her tuition, since she has a righ...

I definitely believe in Dad's intuition. Of course you can't know for sure (and nor can anyone else) if your daughter is on the Autism Spectrum unless she is tested by a professional. I think it is great that you are so attuned to her development, and I applaud you for reaching out here. If she does...

I posted up here a while back. My 28 year old brother did not know he had Asperger's, even though he had been diagnosed as a child - our parents decided not to tell anyone. When I found out (recently) I reached out here at Wrong Planet to see if it was a good idea for my brother to be told about his...

Wow, thank you for all your stories and suggestions. I really appreciate them. Yes, we have tried sharing books and info with him... and he isn't interested. So I imagine that he will not be open. My brother is not independent. He lives at home with our dad, and has been completely dependent on him ...

Thanks, yes I agree. I do think he has a right to know, but I can't imagine how to deliver the news.... ? I suppose kindly, compassionately, and hopefully with an arsenal of information to share with him too.

Hi, I'm Karma and I came to this site after being recommended by a friend who's son has Asperger's. My brother has Asperger's, and my step-daughter has PDD-NOS, MMR and ADHD. I have been an advocate for my step-daughter's diagnosis and education, and only just learned about my brother's diagnosis. O...

A wonderful friend who's son has Asperger's put me on to this site. I have a brother with Asperger's, although I only just found out about his diagnosis this week. He is 28 years old, and has never been told about his diagnosis. When he was a kid we were all told he had ADHD (which he has dismissed,...
