Learning to make and maintain friendships for me has been an issue of trial, error, and sheer repetition. I have made many absolutely horrid blunders in the process, but I now have people who regularly initiate conversations and seek me out if I'm not always responsive. Don't get me wrong, because i...

I used to be in a place in which I was rather desperate for interaction when I first became social. Once I became more mindful of guarding my personal resources, I noticed that people took me for granted much less often and respected me more. Now I typically have offers for conversation and casual i...

I used to be much closer to my family as a little kid. I grew up, though, and stuff happened, so that today I find myself almost a stranger in my own home. As a kid, I never realized the follies and neglects of my parents, nor did I really understand consciously that there was much difference betwee...

I feel much the same, though I believe it has something to do with the way it's presented. In books, you are told what emotions the characters are feeling, or it is fairly easy to judge based on the description of actions (although in a lot of cases, I feel I miss more subtle things  ) and in...

Referring to the OP's example of driving, it's a good thing my parents never did anything to stop me from being independent in that area, because it's a necessity due to where I live. There is no public transportation here, and to have a maintainable existence, one must drive. This is also one area ...

Hi, thankyoubutno.

I have the same problem with my brain stalling in social situations. You are certainly here among people who have seen the same types of problems. :)

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Why is stimming considered a "bad" thing?

In my experience, stimming can be bad simply because others in a social situation find it to be distracting, anxiety-inducing, or otherwise disturbing. So it isn't necessarily that it's bad; it's more that it isn't expedient in certain contexts. I used to pace quite a bit, sometimes multitasking and...

Hi everyone. I recently somehow stumbled onto the topic of autism and Asperger's Syndrome; it's a topic I've looked into before, but as I read some of the more in-depth descriptions over the past few days, quite a bit of it seemed to apply to me rather easily. Some of it was a perfect fit and answer...
