One thing that's certain is that people always know how they want to be treated in any given situation - I just wish I knew what that was!! !! !! Actually, to let you in on a little secret, people don't always know how they want to be treated. They often know how they don't want to be treated, whic... |

I found this article very interesting. I'm a little surprised to see it on page 2 already considering the volume and value of the content. I've reseached empathy a tiny bit myself and it seems to be one of those concepts that has a multitude of meanings to people. It's not easy to pin down the exact... |

I tend to think it's a bunch of things all lumped together. maybe in the future - researchers will be able to unbundle it in the process of better understanding how autism works. I hope so. |

Hey Willard, I can really relate to what you wrote too! I'm a few years younger but the story is much the same. I tried really hard to fit in and it largely just caused me more anguish - in hindsight I should have just joined the computer club and hung out with my own kind. I think the teachers must... |

Welcome to Wrongplanet! the answers you seek are probably here - be patient , whatever you try will take some time to figure out and get working. Aspergers is a stable condition in adults and will not resolve itself with or without effort. one can only realistically expect it to make incremental imp... |

Whatever you decide to do - try any medication at home around people you know before going public with it. ask if you can cut the pills to take smaller doses. sometimes half a tablet works better than the full dose. Valium is not for everybody - it's safest to try it first before your meeting and se... |

I can relate, business networking can be hard work. I find smaller workshops easier to cope with. evrybody is there for the same reason and it gives you something to talk about at the breaks. My suggestion would be to cut yourself some slack and try to find ways of dealing with situations and people... |

Someone said to me once that therapy should be mandatory!! !! - I think so too but then I'm lucky to have a good one.
BE prepared to try again if the first one doesn't work out.
good luck |

seems nobody knows about this - I was hoping for info as well..... I'm getting some help with social anxiety. My therapist recons that you need a certain degree of empathy to suffer from social phobia in order to worry about hurting the other persons feelings etc. She thinks not all those with autis... |

Do yourself a favour and talk to your doctor. You may just have trouble with anxiety, social phobia, etc and if you get some help now you can save yourself years of agony. Keep in mind most GP doctors are crap with matters of the mind so try to insist on a referal.
best of luck, |

Have you ever known a person who was poor at math? couldn't calculate a percentage in their head? or on paper? - they have a weak ability in that area. I can calculate most stuff in my head without any effort but I don't know what the hell is going on in many social situations - the more complex one... |

Heat - esp. sun on my head feels painful and I never get used to it.
Random loud sounds and people noise - my hearing is very sensitive.
touch - unexpected touch on my back makes me jump.
labels on shirts feel like sandpaper.
that's my list! |

Seems like social skills training would be no different than for example teaching deaf kids to lip read.
the ultimate goal is just to help them get on better in the interactions they have with other people. |
