I haven't meet Tony Attwood in person yet. But I own and have read his 'Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals' and his more recent book 'The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome'. I found them interesting. His website is informative with links to many other websites that I find...

I experience this too, but not as much as before. I avoid large warehouse stores like Costco because I get dizzy and nauseous. It helps when I look down mostly while pushing the cart, and wear dark glasses. Busy airports are tough for me to handle. If someone comes up to me when I'm in a crowded, ov...

Living independently has been very important to me. Always. I've made it priority one. With some luck and a lot of work, I live independently, and comfortably at last. At enormous cost. One only has so much energy to go around. I spent more time getting ready for work that others spent on building r...

It is so good to know that there are other people who live alone. I not only want to be alone most of the time. I have to be alone when the stress of a social situation pushes me into 'over drive' and I start shutting down. But I like having relationships too, mostly one-on-one with a person who doe...

Cyberman, Take it easy on yourself. I'm twice your age. I live alone with a cat. And this is perfect for me right now. But I've had a few deep loving relationships along the way. First, you get better reading the NT world and interacting with others. Second, you meet people all over the place and so...

I think we don't know enough yet to draw conclusions on why human homosexuality exists and is persist over thousands of years. I'm one of them. Always have been. I'm an aspie too. So - one more minority group is ripe for speculation. Some will throw stones. Oh my, most of the major religions have a ...

Dyspergian,

Coming to terms with my childhood has been difficult. I have little contact with kids. It takes all of my energy to keep myself together and do the kind of work I do. But I'll retire soon and then do volunteer work, with animals mostly. We have a lot in common. Take care.

For me, chess is simply wonderful. I don't play competitively anymore. My nerves are shot, I can't handle the stress. But the beauty of the game! Logic, justice, truth. It's all there on 64 squares. When I was a teenager, ridiculed, humiliated, good at nothing - along came chess and - oh my goodness...

What fits best for me is having AS from birth and developing schizoid tendencies as I've gotten older. Schizoid wouldn't account for the fine and gross motor coordination and balance challenges I've always had. Plus getting overwhelmed easily and rarely understanding group interaction. I can only be...

Yes, knowing that I have AS helps me take better care of myself, monitor my stress levels better, withdraw from social situations when I start feeling overwhelmed. All a part of self-discovery. Humbling too. I used to often take a strong position that the situation is 'x' while everyone else in the ...

I agree with others here that George is very fortunate to have you for a friend. It likely won't be easy for George in the coming years but a lot of us make it through OK on our own timeline and in our own ways. Depression is not uncommon either as I know from experience. Just be there for him. Unde...

Self-diagnosis through research and thoughtful evaluation is the way to go, in my opinion. And if 3 doctors tell me I have 'x', then I still apply my intelligence to the matter and come to my own conclusion that may affirm or may refute what the doctors say I have. There is no easy physical test, su...

Yes. More reclusive now in fact. As I get older, it's harder for me to be with people for more than a few hours. I get overwhelmed. I still work so making the effort to interact on the job is a major stress requiring solitude to recharge for the next day. Having a cat is SO important to me. And a qu...

Age1600 - good thread on a tough issue. How to stop it indeed. Lots of good practical info here. Self-control through monitoring my stress level at all times. Knowing when I'm getting near the red zone. Last week for example I didn't get out in time and had a mini-meltdown in the project group room....

Like MeshGearFox, I too have pushed myself to stay with a hated job. I crashed big time. I won't do that again. The only way I can work fulltime is to carefully monitor my stress levels. Sometimes I don't do it well. This past week for example, there were too many people in the room and too much goi...
