Ph.D and two MAs. Double major undergrad. My area of specialization is very close to a special interest.
It's easier, more pleasant, and more interesting to study than to socialize.

OK, let's imagine that we need information on, say, how to raise zebras, lions, giraffes and hippos. Two kids fresh out of college, who have a zebra, put up a web site and sell expensive advice that is personal opinion only. They have no credentials and very little life experience. They've only had ...

Yes. I hate having someone try to talk to me when there's a TV or radio or other sound source going on, or in a noisy environment. But one interesting thing -- I'm an interpreter, and I can listen to a recording of simultaneous interpreting (which is actually one language a couple of seconds behind ...

The thing is, when we "pass", people assume it's easy. I nearly didn't get diagnosed because the doctor assumed that since I "could maintain a conversation" it was easy and natural for me. When I told her I was consciously using a script, the whole situations shifted. After 50 ye...

I'm not at all sure. I just went through diagnosis as an adult. It was mostly WAIS-IV and tests of memory. No autism-oriented instruments at all. The opinion (stated to me) was "Those are just questionnaires. I rely on what I can see and observe." Yeah, right, but there' s a lot of stuff y...

Q: Why did the Aspie cross the road? A: A road is a thoroughfare, route, or way on land between two places, which has been paved or otherwise improved to allow travel by some conveyance, including a horse, cart, or motor vehicle. Roads consist of one, or sometimes two, roadways (British English: car...

As a high school teacher, I feel like I'm on a one-woman crusade to tell people that not everyone in the world has to work on a team, in a group, or whatever. The world also needs people who work alone. And there are plenty of people who are not going to be "taught" to work in groups through the mag...

I'm a cheap date -- you could take me to the same movie five times and I wouldn't remember what had happened. I can't sort out who's who. Right now "The Americans" on TV is driving me insane because they disguise themselves all the time -- they're spies, so of course they do -- but I have to keep as...

Not every woman cares about those things.
There are plenty of women out there who value intelligence and loyalty and other qualities you probably possess.
You're probably not well suited for "dating games" but what thinking person is? 8O

As both an Aspie and a K-12 teacher -- Let go of the hype about "21st century learning" and how everyone absolutely must work in groups and collaborate and I don't know what all. The world also needs people who don't do group work, and plenty of people are not made for it. I would rather do twelve t...

I've been blathering on about my special interest on several internet forums for some years now, and to my surprise, I am now regarded as an expert and people are willing to pay me large sums of money to continue talking about it in real life. I realize now this is the sort of "internet presence" on...

The original question in the other thread, though, was not whether or not the OP in that thread should get a job, pay his own bills, etc. The issue was whether or not it was appropriate for the physician to tell him that he should, and do so in a rather insensitive way. The physician is no more qual...

This doctor was way out of line for the WAY she gave her advice/help. That doesn't mean what she was trying to do was wrong. However, she should not be allowed to "give advice" in this way. First and foremost, she's not a psychologist, psychiatrist or therapist, so she should not be dabbling in thos...

One doctor might diagnose someone with autism and the next doctor would not. So what? There's nothing magical about a diagnosis or the lack of one. If you have autism, you pretty much know it. You know there's something going on. If it's later in life, you might have that "Oh, right, that FITS" feel...

Yes. It helps having a label for the way my brain works and realizing that it is significantly different than the way "theirs" is working. But I still dread gatherings and parties and suchlike unless I have a job to do during them. If I'm working (as a musician) that's no problem, because we play th...

I carry earplugs with me at all times. My husband has suggested that I get earplugs specially made for shooting. I haven't had the chance to try them yet but I'm going to. Even with earplugs, I can hear everything perfectly well -- but the earplugs take the edge off things enough to make it bearable...
