There are many good responses to this thread so far. It is interesting to come across this topic as it is one that I have been thinking a lot about lately. There are many people, ASD and NT who are not coping well with the direction that humankind is taking right now. I really don't think it has any... |

Bah. I always thought a lot of politically correct terms (and especially those related to ableism) were invented by someone other than the people they refer to, and here's a perfect example. This seems to be more about what NTs want to think about us rather than how we want to be perceived. Anybody... |

It is the "person first" mentality among NTs trying to be PC. It isn't that the word is offensive, but saying "autistic child" suggests that autism defines the person. Whereas saying "child with autism" puts the person first... |

As far as I'm concerned it's people who disrespect me that I have a problem with, whatever their neurology. People who are respectful and pleasant towards me are fine. People deal with their problems in different ways and anger has kept me alive. Seeing as I'd rather be alive than dead, I'll stick ... |

Sometimes NTs make NO SENSE. Moral of the story-- Stim and smile, and f**k 'em if they can't take a joke. A few years out of adolescence, anyone with any sense will have more important things than a little hand-flapping to worry about. I am NT and I completely agree with you. I have a student on th... |

My nephew, who is nine years old, is going through this right now. He has just recently been diagnosed with Aspergers, but it has been a long process and there have been a lot of difficulties. His melt downs, which are largely related to anxiety, were interpreted by his teachers as anger and aggress... |

Most NT's use it as a generic greeting and don't actually want to know the true answer. I however, am a firm believer in the philosophy of not asking a question that you don't really want to know the answer to. I try to practice this on a regular basis with my students. If I ask a question and get a... |

Not always true. I despise it myself..... I wonder about this. Truly I do. Small talk is from what I observe, nearly 90% of NT conversation. I agree that some take it to such an extreme that even other NT's dislike such 'overloaded' small talk (stereotype of 2 blondes talking vapidly about their na... |

I was wondering if it bothers you when NT's post in the forums other than this thread or the parent forum. I am new here and started a thread that didn't generate much response in the general forums. It is possible that there just weren't that many people that wanted to respond, but it also made me ... |

Thank you for asking. Do you have girls among this group? I recommend that you are careful to choose resources that include the gender divide. I am a Tony Atwood fan. You can visit his website to find good resources. Thank you for all of your responses so far! I do have one girl in my home room and... |

I am new to the forum and would like to start by giving you some background information. I am a first year teacher at a private school for children with special needs. Out of ten children in my class (ages 12-14), there are six on the spectrum. While I do have several years of experience as an assis... |
