I was born prematurely, 28 wks. I excelled in language in terms of speaking and reading from an early age, but I had delays in physical and mental development elsewhere. I only socialize with people I feel comfortable with, (That doesn't include most family members, though I love them), and often do...

I hardly said a word all through out my school years. Whenever I did, I'd get the "Oh gosh he TALKED!" bit. If it bothers you, ask them to stop, or prove that you're not a "one trick-pony" so to speak.

not quite sure what it was called, but I went to a kind of "slow-starter" school because I didn't start talking until I was about 4. was placed with children with CP, autism, intellectual disability...don't remember that much of it.

I also personally find it comforting to see myself as being autistic, rather than a separation via Asperger's. I dislike the term "Aspie" because I find it's too cutesy in relation to what is a serious issue. NOT saying you can't have pride, though.

I don't recall ever formally self-diagnosing myself. I took some sort of AS scale and passed with flying colors :D I was diagnosed by a neurologist with AS right as I graduated high school.

Bravo! Good for you.

My sister, though not autistic, uses what she calls a "therapy rock". Coping items can be very useful, but if you feel you're embarrassed or burdened by them, try to see which ones you could cope without. Hope this helps.

I typically wear a baggy t-shirt and jeans. Long sleeves that are tight (ie, not jackets) are a big no-no for me. I too get criticized for my lack of fashion sense, but I argue, the heck with it, I'm comfortable :)

I refer to myself as having an autistic spectrum disorder, maybe because I tend to think literally. Anyhow, you're certainly articulate about the things that you feel or notice; a lot of folks with ASD, AS, and so on have trouble with that. Also, try the book "Look Me in the Eye" by John Elder Robis...

I mean really good stuff like Daft Punk. I find that I have an ability to immerse myself in the powerful bass and rhythms of this music. I think it would help me a lot and would just be cool in general to be able to play/make this type of music. Is anyone on here knowledgeable as to how to do so? I ...
