Interesting developments. Apparently, the attorney feels appeal to the next level up is warranted. This was rather surprising. It also puts me back in a difficult situation. Either I'm disabled or I'm not disabled. Either way you swing it, somebody is lying. I do not know who. In the meantime, treat... |

Welp, I sure got duped! 3+ years of mental health type people saying "You have Aspergers", "You have autism", "You have depression", "You have Generalized Anxiety Disorder", "You have ADHD". And the biggest whopper.... "You are unfit for competi... |

The hearing is done. Here is what I can say about it. First, I concur. Having the attorney is important. I'm glad I had mine with me. Second, yes there is that "invisible disability" factor. In my case, the trick was to just be myself. It worked out for me. I show a lot more visible sympto... |

Personally, not impressed by the article. Problems started with the recounting of that interview. No, I don’t have experience as a barista, but I’m a quick learner. I let out a casual and dismissive laugh, Which is to say the author came out as a casual and dismissive with zero barista experience. H... |

Scorpius14. The "own private space" thing is interesting. Do some aspies with sensory issues need that private office that's normally supposed to be for managers? I dunno. Makes sense to me. What if wearing glasses was a symbol of managerial rank? That would be an interesting world seeing ... |

It's all good. For the record, I'm not sure I know me that well either let alone whether or not I'm too disabled to work. I don't know what to tell a judge. Just the facts? * I hid in a McDonalds bathroom on my first and only day because I was overwhelmed by the environment and the people in it. * A... |

Thank you, BeaArthur. Let me attempt to adjust my attitude. For one, the road to hell is sometimes paved by well meaning people who both care and truly do know their domain. Let me emphasize. The people I would dearly love to get away from ARE GOOD PEOPLE who wanted to help me. The psychiatrist who ... |

The appeals hearing coming up in a couple weeks leaves me conflicted. Winning validates the opinion of autism and disability experts who all claim I'm unfit for competitive employment. The thought of a judge discrediting those people is a happy one in my mind. It would give me a strong reason to get... |

I also find it very hard to constantly vomit up NT social norms on the spot. I am getting REALLY tired of it REALLY fast. Interesting. Tell me. What social norms do you find inspire the image of vomit? It also drains my energy a lot leaving me unable to do the actual work for my job, but sometimes ... |

I dunno. I walked away from this thread thinking I was in agreement with Rocket and Fnord. Can't say I have any quarrel with SocOfAutism either. All parties brought interesting and valid perspectives to the table. I agree with most of it to one point or another. I'll say it plainly. Temple Grandin i... |

Yes, Rocket123, exactly. The portfolio includes samples that can be directly connected to an established institution. The web application that I did a demo on wasn't connected with a university or a workplace or anything like that. It was all self-taught because it was something that interested me a... |

No, more than a physical artifact. Tried that. Ran on my phone right in front of the tech recruiters. Nobody cared. Same deal with accepted open source contributions. So, I'll rescind the word "portfolio" in favor of "online profile". Maybe by "portfolio building", Gran... |

Actually, any corporation looking to maximize its profits will want people who can perform to the maximum potential that their skills will allow. That's why people with the best degrees from the best schools tend to get the best positions. Interesting. So what your portfolio consists of is not impo... |

A lot of interesting feedback. I like that a lot. It's awesome when people disagree with me, challenge me, and give me ways to reexamine my own opinions. That's kind of awesome. :D It's great that there are people like Fnord out there who handle the hiring process the way they do. It was never my in... |

A few random thoughts. - Be respectful to everyone, be it a receptionist or the guy your trying to navigate around at the local supermarket. - Places that actively try to "avoid hiring autistics" are garbage employers who are not worthy of your services. - Give the Borg some credit! When w... |

There's this Temple Grandin advice about employment for autistic folks that goes something like "Sell your work, not yourself". The real world suggests that such advice is not relevant to most of us. Myself as an example. Being bullied two years ago has consequences I live with today. Beca... |
