In the UK, there is Autscape . In the US, there once was Autreat , spearheaded by the incomparable Jim Sinclair. But Autreat is no more. This appears to be an unmet need at present. (ASAN has an annual gala in DC, but nothing else AFAIK. An "annual gala" strikes me as approximately the mos...

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I can be pretty articulate about things, as long as I don't care about them too much. But as my feelings run high, my words dry up. It seems like the link between autism and abnormal patterns of connectivity in the brain ("too few" connections in...

Fully understanding this paper calls for more expertise than I have, but if I'm parsing this correctly, they looked for a correlation with paternal age (and didn't find one in this sample) -- but they don't appear to have corrected for paternal age in examining the correlation with localized DNA met...

I was born almost a month late, but (also?) have some genetic factors. FWIW, there have been a ton of studies on this and related questions. One study found a fivefold increase in autism risk in premature babies born weighing less than 2 kg. The meta-analyses that have been conducted generally show ...

I'm curious if there are any autism specialists -- either researchers or practitioners -- who are uncloseted autists?

(I'd tend to figure that there must be a few... however, Google hasn't turned up anything, so I thought I'd ask here.)

I was wondering lately if there are some emotions that (some?) autistic people experience that are unknown to NTs. One such feeling might be that special joy that comes from things fitting into a pattern. (And its close relative, the special misery that comes when patterns are broken for no good rea...

Maras, K., Mulcahy, S. and Crane, L. (2015). Editorial: Is autism linked to criminality? The journal, Autism , enjoys a wide readership that extends far beyond academia. We set out here, for the benefit of the whole readership, to debunk the myth that autism causes criminal behaviour . We review th...

It's also important whether or not you, OP are in any way impaired by or experiencing problems because of your traits. I gotta admit, that bothers me. It is of course part of the diagnostic criteria (which makes sense, since they are the diagnostic criteria for "autism spectrum disorder "...

Developmental regression in children with autism is definitely a real thing . My own theory is that this is related to the way that autistic brains appear to keep rewiring themselves longer than NT brains do. There were definitely some "rewiring" moments in my childhood, and I've read othe...

Also, almost unrelatedly, Kaurismaki's The Match Factory Girl (which was the movie used in the study) is an incredible (but fairly dark and haunting) film. Recommended -- if you're into that sort of thing.

I happened across this Finnish study , and it kind of blew me away. Thought others might be interested. Been out for a couple of months, but doesn't seem to have garnered any attention in the popular press. I imagine we've all seen enough MRI studies of autism to make our eyes glaze over, but here a...

The Autism Society of America provides the following stat: 35 percent of young adults (ages 19-23) with autism have not had a job or received postgraduate education after leaving high school. (Shattuck et al., 2012) (For whatever reason, they link to a random newspaper article about the study rather...

Thanks! :D That's actually kind of perfect for what I'm looking for. The subsets of course haven't been validated in the same way as the instrument as a whole -- you wouldn't want to use them for any kind of formal research purpose -- but it seems like this should do just fine for a rough heuristic....
