Thank you. We have been talking about holding him back since the first conference last year. We can see his social deficits more with the older kids in his grade. We figure he will do better socially with the younger kids. Thanks for your input. |

Thank you for your response. Luckily the aide we had problems with doesn't work at our school anymore. Last year we met with his teacher during the summer before classes started. It made the whole year much better. We also got a teacher who was understanding of his differences and researched how she... |

Since my son has recently (this month) been diagnosed with ASD his pediatrician has referred us to a neurologist. What should I expect at this appointment? I have some concerns that my son is having absence seizures, but other than that I don't know what I should bring up to the neurologist. |

I just want to tell you about my experience with letting the school handle things without an iep since we had a great Kindergarten teacher. My son started having the same issues as your son in kindergarten. Making noises, getting in peoples space, trouble with transitions and so on. His teacher figu... |

Our behavioral therapist is planning on coming to the meeting with me. Thank you for all your advice about the meeting. It's nice to have a little personal insight from others before the meeting. |

Thank you! That does sound like something my school would do for sure. I will be prepared for that in our meeting. I guess I didn't think about how accommodations and individualized education were different. I thought that the iep would still be called accommodations. I think I just had my words mix... |

Thank you! We will absolutely have an iep. We have a meeting January 7th. He was already under a 504 but showed he needed more support. That is how we even got the special ed evaluation. I requested the autism evaluation because the school didn't think that was something that needed to be evaluated.... |

Well the results are finally in and my son is diagnosed with ASD. After I spoke with the psych about my concerns with labeling him ED instead of ASD he understood where I was coming from and couldn't deny an ASD diagnosis. I was right about him thinking the school was going to disagree. He said he d... |

I think it's true that there is a wide variety of views within the fields of psychology and psychiatry, and that people don't always avail themselves of the most recent data. Unfortunately, you can't check the credentials of a school psychologist (or you can - but it won't do you any good, really.)... |

Well I got have my meeting with the psychologist today after all. He knows my son has autism but doesn't know if the school is ready to recognize it. I told him if my son has ASD they will recognize it because I won't settle for an ED qualification. He said he was okay with that and just didn't know... |

It really depends on where in the Dallas area. My cousin is a special ed teacher at an awesome charter school in Dallas. If you are close to the bigger school districts I think you would have better luck. We are about 50 miles north of Dallas in a small district. |

I emailed him since we won't be meeting until Monday and this is driving me crazy. This is how that conversation went: ME to the psychologist : Okay I was just really confused as to how it seemed like you were leaning towards ASD and all the surveys were showing that also. Then it was all the sudden... |

Thank you so much for the links. Now our meeting is going to be delayed again because of icy conditions. I guess that gives me more time to get some help about the situation. This isn't a formal meeting and I think that is what I don't know about. This is just our results meeting. I don't know if th... |

Thank you. He said it was only because the results were not final so he didn't want to discuss them with her. I live in Texas in a tiny town. I do think they are trying to just do the easiest thing for them for the time being hoping my sons behavior will change. It's not going to change unless they ... |

Thank you! I was planning on bringing our behavioral therapist with me to my meeting tomorrow but the psychologist said he doesn't want to discuss the results with anyone but me and my husband until they are final. Is that a red flag? |

Those are all points I will bring up to the psychologist. Of course I understand that I won't change his mind on what diagnosis he gives my son but I just don't understand how he can overlook all the surveys that clearly say my son is on the spectrum. Not just my surveys either. His teacher sees it ... |
