Sorry in my original post I didn't mean to write "doctors and my parents", it was supposed to just be "my parents". I will edit that. I put forward the discussion to my parents and showed them the records I have but they still claim that I was diagnosed. The medical record I have is supposed to be m... |

Since I was 10 years old, my parents told me that I had an autism spectrum disorder. I struggled with this for the next decade because I refused to believe that I had autism. I was depressed and suicidal for a couple of years and could never admit to myself that I was so inherently different to my N... |

A sour personality is not inherent of autism itself. Like other people have said, there may be other factors at play here such as depression or even just general laziness. |

Well, I guess aspies can learn to do these things. I traveled to Europe 12 months ago, by myself, studied at a university in the Netherlands and made hundreds of international friends. I will soon be leaving to go back to Australia. By the way you are defining autistic capabilities, then I shouldn't... |

From my understanding, when medical professionals refer to autistic people lacking empathy, they are talking about the ability to recognise emotions. One important survival mechanism for animals is that they need to be able to recognise when another animal is angry, annoyed, sad etc. Autistic people... |

To be called "Autistic", I view that as an insult. I know that there, is all kinds of autism, but to me, being labeled "Autistic", is flapping, making funny noises, non verbal... That's not me. I'd be happy, if Aspergers was giving a totally different catogory all together. We are nothing like the ... |

No, I don't think you should intervene. Everyone comes to the realisation of their autism in their own time. I also participated in camps and other education programs for my autism as a child but I would never have admitted that I had it. Half the time I never even realised that I was in the program... |

As far as getting help for your social issues - not to throw cold water on your hopes, but in my experience, the only thing that improves an autistic's social skills is honing them in social situations, which means making mistakes and embarrassing oneself until you figure out what works for you and... |

I agree with this so much. The intense world theory seems understandable to me. Many of the symptoms of people with autism are intensified when compared to the same function in neurotypicals. One small example of the theory is that the amygdala is enlarged in many children with autism (Brodal, 1992)... |
