Forum: Politics, Philosophy, and Religion   Topic: Obamas plan to grant Amnesty to all Illegal Immigrants

I'd be in favor of amnesty for hardworking and otherwise law-abiding illegals, and a much more open immigration policy in general. But not by Imperial Decree. Obama is trying to make law, in defiance of Congress, which is absolutely not his job. Those who think it's all perfectly marvelous should co...

No ? there are topics (like guns) which I'll pretty much leave to those more knowledgable, and of course there are many topics in which I have little interest. But if a topic does interest me and I'm in the mood, I'll drop in my two cents without hesitation. I'm not here to gain the respect of those...

I can think of some improvements, but first we ought to try following the Constitution as it is. All of it, including the 9th and 10th amendments. Most of what the federal government is currently doing isn't legally authorized at all.

your whole attitude is that "productive" people are all that matter. for you, productivity = worthiness as a human being as opposed to those who cannot produce anything. No, one's ability to earn money in a free market is not the same as one's worth as a human being. I know a pizza delivery guy who...

I am not talking about picking your pocket, but AM talking about general funds and the taxes necessary to maintain such. But so long as we are talking about welfare and not infrastructure etc. there is no such thing as a "general fund" from which everybody benefits. Clearly some will be paying in a...

Don't change the subject. We're not talking about "public services" in general but about straight-up forced redistribution from the productive to the nonproductive, regardless of whether they can't work, haven't tried to work, or just don't feel like working. Let's put it in personal terms. I used t...

Suppose I'm working at a full-time job, in order to provide for myself and my family. According to exactly what logic am I responsible for providing some random stranger a "comfortable lifestyle"?

Whereas I am in fact an Objectivist, but the test has me as a:

Conservative Libertarian Non-Interventionist Cosmopolitan Progressive

Collectivism score: -50%
Authoritarianism score: -50%
Internationalism score: -33%
Tribalism score: -17%
Liberalism score: 50%

Kinda silly.

Those laws are bizarre, and need to be taken up by a higher court which can strike them down. Assuming I'm not hiring a hitman or something it's nobody's concern what I do with my money. Suppose it's not a stranger, but an old acquaintance I run into who's clearly down on his luck, and I buy him a s...

The (D) party has become so consistently vicious that I feel obliged to vote against them whenever possible, and that means filling in circles next to a lot of (R)s. However, I still think of the GOP as Them and not Us. I see today's Republican Party as comprising three overlapping, clashing faction...

I was a CIT, then counselor, at a Y camp for four years in all, after attending the same camp seven summers as a camper. I probably wasn't really mature enough the first year or two, but I had an absolute blast. I came away from the experience with a lot more confidence, patience, and understanding,...

Plus interpreting a phrase like "we have one on the way" in the manner you have is intellectually dishonest. Clearly there are many people who say that who do view the fetus as a human child. They say they do. But if the woman miscarries at two or three months ? which is of course very common ? do ...

You have to remember that in the nineteenth century "liberal" still meant "pro-liberty." The Jeffersonians were liberals, the abolitionists were liberals, Grover Cleveland was a liberal. Today those people look like libertarians or conservatives depending on what else they stood for. Lincoln was a m...

No, I am not setting up a straw man. You implicitly set up this straw man when you criticised Thomas' "no man is an island" remarks on the grounds that "everybody has a right to trade". Thomas: "Government is necessary for society to flourish" Luanqibazao: "Everybody has a right to trade" I pointed...
