I know a family member who essentially did the same thing for her 2 (NT) kids. One of them was a real handful and the other was super shy and they were driving her crazy. She bit it and hired a, I wouldn't have called her a nanny, but full time babysitter. It ate up most of my family members income ...

Just my opinion and not the result of scholarly study: I think it for some it is related to a difficulty in sensing and controlling what the body does in space. Fine motor skills require a very small amount of space to judge oneself and small differentials make a big difference. It takes a lot of f...

ASDMom and Zette; The dev pedi is the one who delivered the ADOS and other tests and provided the diagnosis. We've kept going to her because she keeps saying to schedule a follow up. I don't know what need there is to keep going. Indeed, she doesn't offer any strategies or further insights, therapie...

I haven't canceled the next appointment, but I am going to explicitly ask what the goal of the appointments are etc. I would also prefer to meet with her and discuss these things separately from my son. He knows she is talking about it him but my son doesn't (fully?) know what is going on or why we ...

If you are sending him to camp I have to assume you think he can handle that particular camp. I sent my son to a summer school this year and was in the same position. He's much younger so he's still at the age group where no one is going to think much if he does something odd or opts out of an activ...

It could indeed be that hallway. Frankly Galaxy Quest would probably be a fun joy ride compared to some of the issues at work here... I agree that part of the docs behavior is bedside manner. And it was clear during the diagnosis that she was trying to provide a bit of space between her and us and g...

My point for the original poster is don't jerk the parents around. Don't make predictions that will never be exactly right or often even close. Look up the first Autism patient. His docs wanted him to be committed. He ended up working in a bank and is now retired spending most of his days playing go...

It's good to be able to release all that, isn't it? The doctors said ASD but that he'll be fine (jobs, marriage, kids...) and then said he'd be in special ed his entire life because he won't be able to interact with NT kids. This kind of thing is maddening. Did you have an opportunity to ask for cl...

We've gone back like every 3 to 6 months-ish since. I don't really know why. The developmental pedi just says see you in six months! We've been back 3 or 4 times now. The last was the worst because every other time it was all "he's on track!" "Looks good!" "He's gonna be fine!" He drew pictures and...

I am newly married with a 12 1/2 year old stepson who I suspect has Asperger's. I won't go into too much detail but he has all of the classic signs. He has been diagnosed with ADHD, however, I know that there is more going on with him than just that. My concern for him is because he is not getting ...

I felt something was off from around day 1. My child never slept, he wouldn't latch or take a bottle, and he was incredibly difficult to sooth. He would arch his back like a bracelet. I started googling things.... This went on for about a year. Over that first year he hit every developmental marker ...

I'm going to play a little bit of devil's advocate here. Keep in mind that I do agree that the camp's reaction was inappropriate and should be addressed: if they are a camp specializing in mixed-needs kids, they need to be better prepared to handle situations of this nature. First of all, from what...

Having reread the discussion here two things. 1) No way that should have been such a big deal what was said in the IEP. My son has the same preferences. It was a throw away line anyway. A joke more about your child than the teacher! 2) On being a lady and a gentleman. In my post two seconds ago I wa...

I got a 1950's etiquette book at a garage sale when I was in high school. I thought I had all the answers to life for a while. Here's a gem: "A lady on the left is not a lady." When a man and woman walk together, the woman is supposed to be on the right. I don't know how that works if the cur...

The camp did not handle that well. You must be very upset. I don't have experience with this. But as someone who worked at camps for typical learners in my youth I can say that, and I know the environment is different, but from the description you provided it does not sound like they did much to a) ...

My solution may not be the best one...but I would tell my child to look at the nouns and then right every single thing they could think of about them? Or something like that? Like if it was "What was the emotional journey of Frodo in the book?" Journey + Frodo = ? At least then they would have somet...
