As others have said, most likely it's not a slur when used by people in a way that's not intended to be insulting. Intent is the key when it comes to a reasonable person taking offense or not. It's sad that we live in a time when members of any subculture seem to actively seek out ways to be offende...

I'm not sure how to best answer the poll, so I checked from some other, unspecified place. I grew up in rural New England, which means my roots are definitely country. My grandparents on both sides were blue collar farmers and did a variety of other physical jobs to make ends meet. Country is where ...

I clicked the link, expecting to be annoyed that it's dedicated solely to Autistic kids. I was pleased to see it's also billed as being for adults. I'd love to be able to duck into somewhere like that when I'm traveling, and I've been an adult for a long time.

I'm sure humor differs among Aspies, but I am strongly drawn to satire. I suspect that's pretty common, judging from all of the geeky types (me being one) who frequent RiffTrax movie events...

I'm a bit younger than you, but I can relate to many of the feelings you express. Being diagnosed as I entered middle age has filled me with the sober realization that things could have been so different for me. Even apart from getting help like a lot of younger people enjoy today, just knowing what...

I'm not particularly fond of being poked (I especially hate to have my ribs poked), or being touched without good reason. But it's not usually a big issue now that I'm an adult. (School was a different story.) I do share with others a hatred of being exposed to cigarette smoke in public places. If y...

I think those things are all pretty boring, too. Being nothing more than a consumer adds nothing of value to society.

Yes, I do. I am not interesting in any way to most people. My interests are far different from those of most people I know. I don't have much that can be considered normal for a person my age and those things I managed to accomplish are in danger of going away. I'm curious: what sort of accomplishm...

I'm almost certainly boring to most people. I've got a few special interests that I don't know how to shut up about once I get on a roll. I ran into a younger couple recently who expressed some interest / experience in my special interest (photography). Before I knew it, I was into full Aspie profes...

I'm really not sure what you're going on about. As someone who has written an autobiography about my life experiences on the spectrum, I don't see why I (or any other author) should only tell their story if it happens to be as dramatic as Helen Keller's. My story is nothing like hers, but that doesn...

I hate the sound of my own voice. It's not super high, but it sounds whiny and annoying... to me, at least. I think I tend to speak more slowly than most people, although years of living in Tennessee have almost certainly shaved off any of my native New England clipped speech patterns and slowed me ...

Nothing comes immediately to mind about self-imposed restrictions with respect to daily living. Maybe the closest thing in my experience was an early decision that I would never touch illegal drugs. It probably helped that I grew up in the 70s and 80s, in a rural area where drugs were (I suppose) di...

I'm sure it's probably incorrect and premature to read too much into this study, but I found the following quote interesting. Amazingly, the ability of cancer cells to adhere and migrate on their environment and invade into surrounding tissue were prevented by SHANK protein -- a molecule previously ...

Told to me (NT spouse) about ASD husband Neurologist: He's too old to have Aspergers. He just has OCD and narcissism. I've never had anyone suggest that I'm OCD or narcissistic, but I have seen professionals - who should know better - look at me with suspicion when I reveal that I'm on the spectrum...

I will call something ret*d/autistic if it is bad or stupid. I go by the rules that if you have the condition, it gives you the right to joke about it. For example, I am also a cancer survivor so I will make cancer jokes and not feel bad about it because I had it. Same with autism. I have autism to...

I've seen the term being used to describe a behavior a person does that is consistent with autism like "autistic lack of empathy" to mean someone genuinely doesn't understand, not that they are an as*hole and don't care or the time I was watching a documentary about Russia's toughest pris...
