It may be a silly question but,

How do I get a picture file an reduce or compress it to 16 Mb (the limit for an avatar here)?

My knowledge of computers is not very good, only few months experience. I have tried every thing that I can think of. But don't gone lower than 26 Kb.

Do I need extra software?

Can someone help?

If its just a normal jpg file, you should be able to reduce the size with the program called paint, which comes free with every pc computer. If the image has to become smaller in length and hight, you can do so with it, but the file size will drop as well which is what you need to do. If I remember correctly, the file size also drops if you open, and resave the file over and over.. Not sure though. It is a fact that jpg files drop in quality too every time you open it.. Just to let you know.. Hope this helps.. There might be freeware available on download.com that can drop the file size easier, but if you dont want to go through the hassle, just use paint. Im pretty bad at explaining things sorry lol..

The "Paint" application that comes as part of Windows' accessories, can save images in the JPG format, but the only way to control the size (in bytes) of a JPG image saved from Paint, is to reduce its size (measured in pixels)

Sligtly more advanced graphics programs have a feature that allows you to adjust the amount of compression without changing the image size (width and height in pixels). Using such a program, you have the option of saving the file a few times at different settings, until you have the best possible quality that just exactly satisfies the 16kb limit.

If you are running XP and all you want is a quick way to resize a picture to be able to fit here, then Microsoft has a handy power toy called image resizer that makes it very easy.

After you install the powertoy, you will have a new right click option for jpg images called Resize Pictures. Click it and you can choose the size that you want the picture to be.

To get an avatar that will fit on here click on the advanced button and choose the custom size. For the custom size, put 160 in the first box and 140 in the second box. The resizer will take into account the original image dimensions and will resize the picture using those parameters. A 1920x1200 widescreen photo will come out as a 160x100 photo doing it that way.

A 1024x768 non-widescreen photo will come out as a 160x120 photo and the image sizes will come out way under the file size limit on this board.

You might lose a little detail and it may appear a little softer, but for the most part the avatars are so small that it is hard to tell.

Here is the link to the download page. The image resizer is on the right side about two thirds down.

Thank you to everybody, if you are still following this topic.

It looks easy (it is possible that, it is easy) but I has taken me a few hours (I must say that I have enjoy the time) to get this avatar posted.

I must admit that this is not the image that I wanted to use but is the first one that has got down to a usable size.

I have a big portfolio of failures which (I hope) will give me a few answers and teach me a few technics.

It may seem a small thing but I am happier than this morning.

Don't be surprised If I change the image soon.

shortcuts:
CTRL-R to resize image to desired size

CTRL-S to save image,

choose JPG, and if filesize is still too big, choose a lower quality (80 for example)

Is it a Photoshop avatar? If so, open it, click "Save as", hit "OK" and voila! It's smaller!
