Does anyone know if there's a way around this??? Thanks for any help.

I haven't worked much with Vista, but if you right click on the program's icon and choose "properties", there should be a tab labeled "compatibility" that will allow you to run the program as if you were using an earlier version of Windows.

I checked the compatibility menu, and it listed Windows 95, 98/ME, NT4.0, XP, and 2003.

Whenever I try to run it, it says:

Unable to create temporary files in current directory. Run Pandemonium from the directory into which it was installed.

(Which I did!)

Then it also said that it can't run without a VALID RESOURCE.CNF file in current directory.

I guess I could try and convert my computer back to windows, but then I'd probably lose a lot of files, wouldn't I? :?

If you still have a windows 95 / 98 / whatever disc lying around, you can download Microsoft Virtual PC for free. On the virtual PC you can emulate an old windows installation and attempt to install it on there.

Why do you think I made the jump to OS X and Parallels?

Vista isn`t all that bad has half the Mac Fans think it is. The Only reason why Vista is so bad is due to People who turn off Automatic Updates and don`t know sh%t about Maintaining a computer.[The 1st thing most people do after installing a new OS/ Getting a new computer is Logging on Myspace.] Don`t even get me started with Virus Protection, some people have none or risk there computer with McAffee and have no intent on Virus Definition Upgrades. Last but not least Microsoft intended Vista for new Hardware and with computers being as cheap as they are now why not upgrade. Not your old 1Ghz Pentium 3 which really should have 2000 Pro on it.[ Apples are Overpriced Toys that don`t give you power to Tweak your OS and no spripting tools.]

You didn't answer the question.. I asked why have Vista at all, everything works on XP and there's no real advantage to having Vista since Microsoft barely added any new features and didn't add any that we need to upgrade for really. I didn't explain to why OS X is better than Windows or anything I just asked why and you went on ranting about how people need to buy new computers and accommodate vista's needs and such when that wasn't even necessary.

Microsoft lets you tweak their OS? I've never heard of such a thing! It sounds to me like you need to relax, and learn a little more about computers before you start implying that any MS OS is better than Apple. Virus defs are so important with MS products because there are soooooo many problems with their stuff.

You are calling Windows-based computers non-toys as compared to Macs? That's a pretty telling statement!! !

A little off topic here, but Vista has added a lot of new stuff, however most of it is under the hood.

Shadow Copies - Vista automatically creates backups of all of your files as you edit and delete them. If you saved over a paper you were working on, or you decided that you wanted to get yesterday's version of it and to get rid of all of the saves you made today, you can do it with shadow copies. It's a lot like that Apple Time Machine.

Resolution Independent Graphics - Vista provides an API for programs to present 2d graphics that are resolution independent vectors instead of bitmapped graphics. OS X has had this ever since it came out. XP only supports bitmapped graphics. Windows has needed this for a long time. This allows for cool and useful effects like OS X's Expose. Unfortunately Vista's Flip3d sucks terribly, but now the tech is there to use expose clones. (I use one called switcher.) Additionally, this will make DPI scaling much easier which will be important as we get higher resolution displays and we would prefer not to have tiny text on them. Also the GPU can do some of the work of desktop graphics now.

There's more, but these are the biggest two that stand out to me.

Macs are geared towards the creative market, while PCs are for gaming and office use. I don't like Vista since it's too bloated for its own good, the UI is horrible - Verizon's VZW OS on their phones comes in second, and it still has compatiblity issues. I tried joining a Vista Business system to a Active Directory network and Vista won't see a shared drive on a W2K3 server.

Not to mention Vista is a total hardware hog - it works great on a Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2/FX/Opteron with 2gigs of RAM and non-integrated graphics. I've seen too many low to mid end HP/Toshiba/Dell/Gateway machines hiccup on Vista. I laugh when I see a Celeron/Pentium Dual Core/Sempron/Pentium M/Athlon 64 with integrated graphics run Vista.

And OS X is perfect - you don't need to tweak it. To me, any HP or Dell unless it's a business class system like the HP Compaq business series/Dell Latitude or OptiPlex is a toy.

Shadow Copies -
Ancient technology.

which post-dated Beryl by a year? And you say it doesn't work, anyway? And... all I've seen of it seems to be the spurious "domino" window selection?

I have to say I'd be interested to know what else Vista adds, other than (I gather) a vicious DRM and a wealth of "Do you really, really want to do that?" message boxes. Not to forget a dizzying pricing structure.
