How do you make a professional website?
the reason i ask is because i want to make a website about heavy metal (music)
this is how i want my site to be like:
have a page of top 100 lists and a page for news and a page to guide people on what albums they should get (if they are new to heavy metal). and links to other sites.

I might know. It depends on whether or not wrongplanet.net is considered professional.

You need to make it look polished and you need to buy a domain name.

I'll also add that WrongPlanet.net doesn't look as polished right now as it will next week when we finish the WrongPlanet.net redesign. You guys are really going to be impressed.

Sweet wonder what WP is going to look like.
Yes you have to buy a domain. To design a web site is probably best to get some one else who knows how to do it or if your are very computer literate you can try and learn how to do things you self by spending tonnes of time trying to learn how to do it your self. Um that said I think there are ways to get programs like or get Front Page Express that mean you can design you web page visually and not have to learn html code.

You most likely will have to buy a domain name and some web space (a place to store your web page).
Really depends on what you are willing to do to set up a page and how you want to go about it.

You said you wanted a "professional" website! Anything professional is going to cost you money up front. You can still design a web page for free. In fact, if you want, I can give you access to a folder on this domain. Actually, I'll do that for anyone who wants to make their own website. Just PM me if you want to set up your own web page for free.

To summarize:

You need web hosting. This can be anywhere from $40 per year to $40 per month or more depending on what you need. Generally you can start small and keep increasing as needed.

You need a domain name. They cost between $7 and $15 per year depending on where you get them. Some hosting providers include the domain.

If you want to create the site yourself, you need knowledge of HTML, graphics work, et cetera. You may be able to get away with not knowing HTML for very basic sites (by using an editor such as Nvu), but anything significant will require some learning. Don't worry, HTML is very easy to learn. (Just don't use Internet Explorer. Ever. Stick with Firefox, Safari, Opera, or another browser that actually supports the standards.)

If you want to have dynamic content, you need a decent engine. I use WordPress for my blog, but to each their own; different engines are more suited to different types of site. Some engines might require some knowledge of programming.

Otherwise, you can have a professional create the site. This is often expensive.

If you want it for free, then I'd suggest freestarthost.com then grab a .tk domain from my.dot.tk
grab a free PHP script like PHP-NUKE and you can set it up from there..

Yea, probably not.. I haven't really looked through too many PHP scripts.. (Other then forum PHP scripts) It's just the first i've stumbled on and used. could you mention a few that you prefer? (I know it depends on what you want your site to do though) I've looked around hotscripts and I've been looking for a better one to suit my site, which is more of a homepage and doesn't need all the extra things that php-nuke has.

WrongPlanet's code was based on PHP-Nuke. PHP-Nuke is really horrible and we've had to modify so much just to make it look like it doesn't suck, and even then, it still doesn't work well. We're currently modifying a lot of PHP-Nuke's code so we're really changing the way it works.

Neat, I didn't even notice... Yea, for my site I haven't had time to edit everything so it basically looks like just out of the box PHP-NUKE, and I'd like to change it, but I really don't have the time for it so I was thinking about just a new script. I did however notice a little in member options it looked familiar :D
