You could just recompile anything you need from other distros, but that gets silly. You end up with a hodge podge of software with no repositories, so security beomes a real issue. I understand there isnt a lot of software for it?

Maybe not so bad. Here wikipedia speaks on the matter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_Linux

Well, if it turns out badly I'll scrap it and switch to Slackware or Debian, or else go back to Ubuntu.

Thats true. You have your /home on a separate partition, so its easy enough.

shugo, I've got a good idea of what might be controversial enough to avoid on wiki. Arch Linux isnt really a health risk.

I have the "new: iMac, 24 inch specs are:

Model Name: iMac 24 inch
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
HD is 500 GB, hate the inbuilt audio but use headphones most of the time anyway, threw the "mighty mouse" away, using an MS but want a Death Adder, did have a 17' flat panel iMac which may be fixable (....sometime) and a workable 300mz HP Win 98SE because I like old games, a Sony Trini, 15 inch for that.

I WANTED an $800 laptop and going to skip the $999 because they are just greedy but would like to get a Time Machine and a TB backup not necessarily Mac.

I've owned some kinda computer since '84 but working in them a long time before.

Custom rig:
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz Q6600 OC'd to 3.2GHz
XFX NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB
Kingston 4GB DDR2 800MHz Memory
2x750GB SATA-2 7200RPM Harddrives
ASUS NVIDIA NForce 650i Motherboard
DVD+R Drive (Forget what brand, I pulled it out of my old computer instead of buying a new one)
24-inch Samsung that runs at 1920x1200

MacBook Pro:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz
NVIDIA 8600m GT 128MB
2GB DDR2 667MHz Memory
120GB SATA-2 5400RPM Harddrive
Superdrive (DVD+R)
15.4-inch glossy display that runs at 1440x900

Though I consider the MacBook my secondary computer I actually use it more than the custom rig.

Dead thread walking! :P

I have:

P4 3.06 Prescott
1.5 GB DDR, max for this comp
Onboard ATI 9000 IGP
60 GB HD
10/100 LAN
Mini Firewire, 3 USB, IR, parallel and serial. Oh, and a cardreader. Like thats important to me...

Its a laptop :P Can do most anything I want unless the game requires pixel shader 2.0, it ticks me off ATI wont do some sort of emulator for it.

I also have two original IMacs, tray-loaders, running 8.5. One of them is even a Rev A Bondi, but she's not in the best of health right now.

My aunt has a Rev A bondi (the first iMac model that was made, btw for those who do not know)...Hers is okay and it's running 8.1 but hasn't been booted in a while because the keyboard hit the crapper.

The god-awful puck mouse still works though.

I pretty much resolve not to buy any revision A machine. I usually wait for the 2nd revision, for all the quirks to get worked out.

Does anyone here have AND use 2 ethernet ports? I'm tempted on getting a faster switch and bridging my power computer to go to a speed of 2Gbps (256MBps) But, the packet flow will only be as fast as the recieving adaptor

I use 2 ethernet switches in my classroom/office/shop @ the high school I go too. However not @ home because my DSL provider is picky about bandwith.
