I played the game that WoW basically borrowed everything from but polished it up; Everquest. I know how amazing these games could be, but EQ was the first (3D MMORPG), and the best :P

I found it really hard to get groups in WoW.

I play MMORPGs, just not WoW. I actually am more into City of Heroes/City of Villains because of the entire 'be a hero' concept that breaks the MMO mold.

Also, I play Guild Wars, the WoW alternative... that has no monthly payments... and better PvP.

I played Asheron's Call & Dark Age of Camelot and never really enjoyed them beyond about a month. It was so hard to level and there just wasnt enough to do I found.

WoW, on the otherhand, I've been playing addictively for over a year now. Its been a good 6 months since I hit 60 and I still cant stop playing. Molton Core is my home away from home. Getting a good group is impossible, if you're just spamming LFG in general chat. You have to be in a good guild, if it wasnt for my guild, I probably never even would've went to 60.

Heh I just posted about WoW on another one of the forums. I have been playing on and off for over a year now...started a human mage, ran him up to level 33 then switched servers to play with a group of friends. Got that human mage to 60 but stopped playing in July because I find the level 60 experience kinda frustrating. I prefer small groups of friends, plus honestly running the level 60 raids is incredibly repetitive and usually results in no gain because you're competing for limited drops with 40 other people. Currently I'm working on a troll mage who's up to level 45 or so now.

(yes, I only play mages...I like to blow things up.)

MapleStory is another MMORPG that is free to play.

Ragnarok Online if you play the official servers cost to play but there are private servers out there that are free to play on.

I have wow but haven't played it yet, but read about it as best i could. i hear understand paladin undead skills dont work against forskaken which they ought to. the concept balancing classes always struck me as odd, true balance would be every skill have excactly the same damage and mana cost. Why would a warlock have be more or less powerful than say a priest. things the game doesnt explain well what is the origin of the holy light and shaman spirits. isnt a druid and a shaman the same thing? or is that a druid channels forest spirits and a shaman channels elemental and ancestral spirits. why cant the holy light satify the elven need for energy.(in the lore high elves practised the path of the holy light) why cant the night elves forget the high borne after all this time. cant what was done for hellscream be done for the blood elves. capture them and just keep purging and cleansing them until the dark magic is gone and fill them up with something else, elune, druid spirit of their ancestors, shaman spirits, holy light.

for the future death knight and necromancer should be playable classes.(summon skeletal armies yeah)

I was just at the local Future Shop buying a new mouse, and some guy (probably in his early 20's), was buying 10 prepaid 60-day game cards for WoW and like 4 for City of Villains (with taxes, that's like $700 canadian). I thought about giving him the unsolicited advice "Don't do it!! !!" but he's obviously addicted already. I've never been into MMO's. I prefer fps/rts/action-adventure games, but I don't understand the allure of spending all your time and money on a damn game. I have one aqaintence (who I never see anymore  ), and all he does is work and play mmo's... Someone please explain to me why this game (or any mmorpg) is so good and worth the time and money.

When I tried it about a year ago, it was very much alpha, didn't have very many NPCs or anything up, no combat etc. Characters looked interesting, when all features are implemented.
